I just got through reading my newspaper and discovered that the Border Patrol Agents who shot and killed an illegal alien, who had taken one of the Agents service weapon in a struggle, in Nogales, Arizona are going to be sued by the Mexican Government. I can understand that their government would want an investigation into the death, but the Mexican Consulates in Nogales and Tucson hired an attorney to start taking legal action against the Agents. Those of us in the Patrol should be screaming to our Local Union's and to the Fraternal Order of Police to do something to protect the Agents from these bulls*!t lawsuits. I for one will bring this subject up at my next FOP meeting and I hope others out there will too. We have enough to worry about from management when we have to end someones life but it now seems that we will have to worry about foreign governments bringing legal action against us as well.

What possible reason do they have to sue? You do still need a reason...right?

It is a sad day when criminals have more rights than LE agents, because self-defense obviously don't matter anymore. I really don't know why I want to go into LE so bad.

I guess you don't need a reason to sue someone when you are a foreign government. Kinda like the rancher in Arizona whos being sued by Mexico for detaining illegals on his own private property. It falls under some twisted human rights crap. I guess the tonk had the right to take the Agent's weapon and do with it whatever he pleases. Sharky, now you know why so many at STA 1 are slugs.

Since it's Thanksgiving and you guys are Thanking Doris for all her fine work. I thought I would thank Her for ALL the wonderful things she has done for INS.

Getting Border Patrol Agents, Immigration Inspectors and Immigration Agents up graded to GS-11s.(Hey, the Ajudications Officers giving away the country are GS-12s.What are We doing?)

Getting Inspectors 6C coverage. ( approx. 70,000 felons caught last year is not enough.)

Providing Me with the best equipment you possiably get. (I won't even Go there.)

Hiring All those wonderful Outstanding Scholars as Special Agent and Deportation Officer right out school. (All the current INS Officer corp must be real Dumb.)

promoting Those Great individuals to Supervisors. (Without them I Never would of realized How smart I am.)

Attempting to reach all those diverse hiring goals. (I personally, I have found this to be quite amusing.)

For Surporting Our Law Efforts.(The Large Amount Detention space available, The overwhelming surport You have shown ETC.)

I of course Cannot Thank YOU enough for allowing the Naturalization of 115,000 Criminal aliens.(I kwow it was too hard to get all those backgroud checks done before Election day. No political motivation there.)

Thank you for Being You. And For Retiring.

If Any of You Guys can Name some more things to thank Her for Feel free to join in.
Just My 2 cents.

I glad to see Agent Kirpnick's Murder got Convicted. I also see more of these nice law suits to come.

Augie:

Spot on. I'm a Guard LRS NCO (just came back after a 10-yr break in service — I'm a product of the Reagan Era, not the Clinton Regime), a licensed pilot and ground instructor with a First-Class Medical Certificate from the FAA, in top physical condition (as in 6'1", 168#, less than 5% body fat and able to do a 14-mile run in 93 minutes), currently age 36, scored 93.5% on the Border Patrol Agent Exam back in January 1999 (at a time when there's all this glowing bullshit about INS wanting another 20000+ BP Agents), yet get a form letter the next month from the USBP Hiring Unit describing the medical exam and waiver process, with a nice bold paragraph stating in no uncertain terms "VISION REQUIREMENTS WILL NOT BE WAIVED". The current USBP standard is 20/70 or better in each eye separately and 20/40 or better with both eyes uncovered, correctable to 20/20. I'm correctable to 20/10, but fall through the cracks due an uncorrected DVA of 20/200 bilaterally.

Okay.... And what's this about the INS hiring 18-year-olds now? That I find unfathomable. I always thought that one had to be 21 or older to be a Federal Agent, and that applicants who would actually be competitive would tend to be significantly older.

Oh yeah....

I'm thankful that I don't have Janet Reno for a boss!

You have to be 21 upon graduation from the academy. I think he meant straight out of college, not high school.

William, I'm not sure if you are refering to My comment on the outstanding scholars or something else all together.

The outstanding scholars have 3.4 or better grade point average in basket weaving or whatever, when they graduated college. INS hires them on this program almost Right out of school. I am Not saying that Hiring College grads. is Bad. It's You have guys who are Patrol Agents, Inspectors, Agents and alot of others with anywhere from 3 to 10 years on the Job who want those positions. If your going to hire them because they are Good school just don't do it over the Rank and File officers. I have recently delt with a couple of these "Smart" guys.

As for Under 18, Are you talking about the Explorer program? You have to be 21 when you complete the basic academy (As sharky already stated.)

I had A problem with the sight thing too. I had to send them prof that I have a pair of eye glasses and that I wear them. There is other LEO jobs other than a Patrol Agent with INS that are not that strict on eyes.
