I would like to get some thoughts about the above scopes. I am looking to get one of these for my SOCOM II rifle. Please share any experiences, pros/ cons etc....Also open to other suggestions as well. Thanks.

How are you going to mount them? Does you SOCOM II have the rail that extends to the rear all the way to stripper clip guide, or does it end just forward of the receiver? If the later, you will need a Smith mount or similiar. If the former, you could mount it on the rail on the only issue would be height. Both scopes have an integral mount that is designed to put the scope at the correct height for an AR type platform. This puts them much higher on a mount for a M1A platform. You will not be able to get a good cheek weld without adding something to build up the height of the buttstock.

Personally I would look at a traditional tube type scope with 1-4X magnification. There are several out there that run the gamut of price ranges. I read that Premier Reticles has marked down their S&B Short Dots that puts them closer to the price of the Loopy and ACOG. I have not verified it, but plan to so I can get another one. I love the short dot and have had it on both my AR15 and my DSA SA58 (FAL type of rifle).

Attila,

I actually bought a 6 in. rail extender that brings it just over the ejection port area of the gun. I have an Eotech on there now but want to capitalize on it's distance by adding something with some magnification. The ACOG TA55A is not cheap- they are about 1200.00. The Leupolds are anywhere from 550-699.00.

Are you saying that neither of these will work well and will be too high? I'll look into the S&B short dot also. Thanks.

they can be used but you would need to raise the comb considerably to get a good cheek weld. Does your rail have a groove in it to mount ACOGS?

Look how much higher the occular lens is above the rear sights.

I believe leupold makes a 1-4x in a conventional tube type that some like. IOR also makes one that has been well received.

The best deal on a Short Dot I have read about was 1500.00 so they are not cheap, but well worth it.

Atila,

My ACOG has the flat top adaptor (Accucam) already on it and my rail is much lower than yours, as it raises just slightly off the rail forward of the ejection port area where the SOCOM II cluster rail ends. I would say that it is about 1/2 in.- 3/4 in. higher than the iron sights.

I was using that ACOG/ Accucam as an example of what I would do if I were to purchase a TA55A.

***that is not my rifle. I found the picture on another forum. Do you also go by SOCOM16Z***

Your rail may be lower, but the flat top adapter will add a bit of height, so overall I would think it would be about the same.

If you already have the ACOG, slap that puppy on there and get some trigger time to form your own opinion. The scope itself is great, especially for ARs. I just like something that has the ability to be mounted lower on a M1A/M14.

The ACOG I have is on my AR, the Eotech I have is on the SOCOM II. Since I am in Iraq and not at home I can't shoot my rifle. I am trying to get some feedback before I lay out the money and find out I have a turd.

Gunz, I'd take a look at the 1.5-5 MR/T with the illuminated reticle. The SPR reticle and cams aren't for the .308 but they might have them in the back of the book somewhere. I'll ask Stacy about it tomorrow if you're interested. That rifle probably actually deserves the variable to 8 power, I forget the exact numbers now but it would serve to stretch it's legs better.

Jody,

Any recommendations are appreciated. I'll search out the 1.5-5 Leupy and check it out.

I've got a L CQ/T MK4 on my M4 and it works great. Simple tgt acquisition, and 'zoom' if you need it. Haven't shot that ACOG yet.

I also have one of each mounted to M4's. They both have their plus' and minus'. My personal ACOG also has a Dr Optic red dot mounted on top. It is a bit high but works. I like the variable zoom on the Leupold, and I also like the height of the MKIV on an M4. Might be a tad high on the Socom. MKIV is battery operated but does have an etched reticle if the power goes out. MKIV might be a bit fragile in a true combat environment. Just something about its height and shape makes me wonder.

The ACOG has a great 4X but is not variable. Great ranging reticle. I like my quick release accucam. ACOG IS much more coin however, my choice for your overall situation I would personally have to go with the ACOG. It is also my preference for my LE environment and what I do. However I do have the luxury of having M4's mounted with the MKIV, ACOG and the Eotech. Eotech being my favorite for CQB stuff.

@IraqGunz,

What did you end up going with ? I'm only about 3 years late getting to this thread. I'm wanting to get an elcan but I'm also wondering if the Leupold cqt would be better.
