View Full Version : possible phony recon check

Ran into a guy about a week ago in a local bar in Kansas City area wearing a 1st Recon Bn t-shirt bought off the internet. (I have the same one off of ebay express. Maybe I'm the poser.) Claims he was with Charlie Co. Now I've been out of the loop for awhile, but to my understanding (without violating any opsec) Charlie Co. has a little bit different t/o than back in my day. This kid was pretty young and said that he had been out for a year. I threw a couple of senior enlisted names at him that I know for a fact served with 1st within the last 3-4 years. He didn't know any of them. These are names that anyone would know that would have been in this unit over recent years. Didn't get the guy's full name, but I'm sure I'll run into him again. Next time I will get his full name for an official check. Normally I would rip the shirt off of his back, but I was with my chick in a public establishment. Will post again when I have more details to send proper pm's.

I used to hate doing EOD ops with the navy guys in those fucking things! Not a pair of under wear among them....Dicks and balls hanging out, who knows what dripping. And that was just the female Navy EOD techs!! Disgusting!

Remember on ship and around the squad bay we thought we were cool to fold down the waistband on the UDT shorts 1 roll and tell the boots when they were salty finished their first pump they could do the same. For that matter I dont know why we even called them boots as they all came from line companies with 1 pump under their belt already or transfers form other Recon companies. I Used to wear a 28 also ..... that was a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away when I went by the name of.....

Yeah so do I. I had to have them adjusted a little. You'd be surprised how much material you can add to a pair of those things.

When I checked into Bn, we were sent to the scuba locker and issued 2 sets of UDT shorts, a sling rope, and a rock. Had no idea what my ass was getting into. Damn I miss that Recon Rash.

You're right Doc, The shit we got away with... one of the boots back in the day has some pics of the day we hung some one in the spie harness bare balls from the third deck of the barracks. The day Bradford came up and we had the waterfall coming down the stairs from the platoon battles during field day night... I'll find the pics...

Reconhawaii, not knowing your time frame and being east coast, would that be then Captain Bradford, CO of ARS Fort Story, circa 1986? Still have my UDTs size 30...

Yep, that would be the one. My 28's are long gone. No way could they fit now.

Yeah, I still have them, but they stopped fittin' a while ago. Stud Bradford ran like a friggin deer -- damn near gave me a heart attack on every run. Loved to play head games with us on the runs too, especially when we got near the gate thinkin' it would all be over in just a few more yards, only to run us past it for a few more miles/dunes...

Sorry about the hijack. The head games worked. Many times he'd keep running past the parking lot and guys would start dropping out. Then after the run we'd be standing there while he had us chant "we are ninjas of the night" and give us lectures on warrior spirit. Whenever somebody was awarded the 0321 mos, he'd have a little ceremony at midnight where we'd have a beer and recite the "Frog Family". Which I think went like this:
We are, we are the frog family
Drink rum, drink rum my friend
And come along with us
Because we don't give a damn about any old man who doesn't give a damn about us.

Or something like that. He was a great skipper. But sometimes I just had to roll my eyes.:p

I have a pair of 28's too. I wasn't Recon, but we had to get them for Scout Swimmer School, they were on the gear list. The rash was the worst. Especially after you had to sugar cookie and run Bellows Beach, multiple times.

That's funny. I was not Recon, but in 88 our little raid company got a new CO named Capt Bob Coates. He made us wear those little hot pants too. And yes, we all thought we were the shit in our jungle boots, dives socks, and udt shorts. I happened to visit Col Coates a few months ago and he gave me a copy of a video from that time. One night a couple of weeks ago I broke out the video in a drunken moment of pride with some friends over at the house. We looked like a bunch of fairies twittering about the flight deck of our ship with those plum smuggling shorts.

But if I could get my lard ass into now, I would certainly parade them around. Mine were a size 30. As a line company we were not as fit as you Recon guys.

Before I went to 1st Recon Bn, I was with Wpns Co. 1/9 from 88-90. My section was attached to Capt. Coates Raid Co. sometimes. Fergie we probably did some training ops together and didn't even know it. I just remember the then "Capt. Coates" always walked around with his hands in his back pockets while overseeing operations. Even back then his men worshipped him.

Murdog, I was in 2nd platoon. In fact we had a little reunion last April in Vegas and Col Coates joined us. That was how we reconnected. We were all amazed at his ability to remember individual Marines, as well as events from that time. Good to hear from you. S/F

Damn Red Dog,

I can't believe you remembered that chant that Bradford had us do. I still got our picture from when we won the Operation Bear claw, coon dog possum hunt competition that Bradford had us do.

I also do have to admit, I fell for the ole running pass the barracks routine myself. After the first time I just kept expecting it. I always wished I was in Second platoon; The weight lifitng platoon as we knew them...

Always hated the running, but I'll swim like crazy anyday with my size 32 @#$ I mean 34 UDT's. DO they come with an elastic band now days?

Murdog,
You need to PM me and let me know where you live in KC. I'm from KC too...but in Nigeria at the moment.
I remember Capt. Coates as well. Our platoon was attached to the first MEU he did as "Small Boat Raid" company commander in 88'. I trained some of the STA platoons from the next MEU's before deployment while I was with IMEF SOTG. It seems like 1/9 STA was one of them.
I ran into another old Recon bubba when I was coming home from this place on rotation in January. Ed R. He retired about a year ago or so and now works for Remington. He's another Recon/Sniper type. Anyway, give me a shout. Good to see some of the "old" guys floating around here.

So, I was in VA Beach at ARS in '03 and if you've been there, you know that the Marine Corps Band school is there as well...at Little Creek. Well, one weekend we were out on the beach and found some little turd telling some girls that he was stationed at Little Creek for ARS and was telling her all kinds of bad ass stories.

Of course we questioned the little turd and completely demasculinated him in front of the girls he was trying to impress (who weren't worth impressing anyway). After throwing a few things that could be perceived as threats at him, he ran away like a little girl. Pretty comical.

Just thought someone might get a kick out of that!

Everyone wants to wear the t-shirt, but no one wants to pack the gear. I literally have ripped a t-shirt off someone for claiming to be an action guy. I wonder if the Marine Corps band has to go through Pre-Tuba instead of Pre-Scuba.

I literally have ripped a t-shirt off someone

My TL did that at Del Mar... walking to the chow hall, we saw a young Marine wearing a "7.62 Design" Recon shirt. He walked up to him and said, "Are you Recon?" the kid said "Uh... No, Cpl." My TL asked him, "Do you want to be?" the kid replied that he did. My TL demanded his shirt, received it and said, "This shirt is waiting for you at Battalion. Pass screening, finish BRC and come find me. My name is Sgt. *****ick. Do that and I'll give it back to you." Then he said, "You're out of uniform. Go get a shirt on." :D

Love it. While you're at it piss in front of yourself and swim to the armory to check out an asphestos suit for the flamethrower range. Grab me a can of backblast for the AT-4, a baseplate jack for the 81 mortars, a box of grid squares, and the keys for the hummvee. Go to the company gunny and check out a PRC-E7, and oh by the way, eat my fuck and get my rank reduced for hazing.
