Looking for a 9th POB ballcap on the net I came across this website:
http://www4.army.mil/ocpa/read.php?story_id_key=5994
You can read the quote yourself but I found this pretty interesting:
"In the early hours of active combat, they used a story from a psychological operations officer who described what may have been the first Iraqi combat death.
“The cause of death was a box of leaflets that fell out of a Combat Talon aircraft when a static line broke. The box impacted on the Iraqi guard’s head, and 9th PSYOP Battalion may have achieved the first enemy KIA of Operation Iraqi freedom.”
So is this true, or is to be chalked up to the "Drove Noriega to surrender with loud rock and roll music" type of war stories.

I call B.S.
A static line is capable of pulling the chute out of the pack being worn by a 200 pound Ranger wearing 120 pounds of gear, but it breaks while deploying a 40 pound box of leaflets?
Plus, how on earth would anyone ever be able to verify what that box hit while flying from a moving MC130 Combat Talon, much less know that he died? In order to know that it not only hit someone, but killed him they would have to be flying VERY low, VERY slow, and right over the top of an Iraqi military position while taking ground fire.
Furthermore, the boxes are designed to break open at the full extension of the static line, so most of the contents would be gone, meaning the box would weigh much, much less than it's loaded weight.
I think it is one of those, "Wouldn't it be funny if..." stories that got warped. Kind of like the "Ether Bunny" story. Nobody can tell you, Yes, it happened, I know the guy it happened to, his name is _______.
That is kind of an old story and I think I mention in somewhere in one of my articles. What may be more accurate (if the guy wasn't BSing me big time) is a Vietnam Kicker who talks about dropping a leaflet box on a VC junk and sinking it.

There is a bud of truth to the rock in roll in Panama - of course the media never got it right - but the rock and roll music was played and it had a purpose which helped achieve the capture of Noriega.

Yeah, it allowed General Cisneros to talk to Noriega in peace without the reporters listening in.

It had its purpose, but if you were not there or didnt have Pap as an AIT instructor I doubt you know.

Actually, I always liked the way Wamsher told the story - Pap wasn't as good a story teller until he got older. I was there and yet I wasn't. Long story - different sector, their ex-platoon sgt, ran in to them, had a hummer and a radio, so tried to keep them supplied with , um, certain things. blah blah, yawn........

We were sitting around talking today, and this subject somehow came up......The word that I got was that it was a leaflet bomb, not a leaflet box. The word on the street over here in 9th BN is that a piece of the bomb fell to the earth and landed on someones head.........Bear in mind, this is all hear say......

I don't agree..we don't really know the details of the situation in the plane..I've seen plenty of things break that were designed not to fail my entire life..shit breaks, perhaps it just wasn't connected all? And as for hitting someone..shit happens like that all the time! i remember a guy that was killed by a .308 round fired in the air after the hunter snagged a dear..traveled some 3 or 4 miles and went through the guys trailer roof and hit him in the head, or that guy in cali that was sent to the hospital after getting hit with a panel from a commercial aircraft flying at like 15,000ft...plus 40lbs falling from even 20 feet could kill a person, sounds pretty plausible to me..but then again is could be PSYOP witch craft trying to put ones self as a landmark lol

I was in the 8th s3 shop in 2002-2004. This supposedly happened in a-stan early 2002. Can guarantee it didn't come across any sitrep from any psyop forces in oif from the time we started dropping paper through Aug 2004. I would have hear about it, since I was the 8th pob sitrep bitch for a long ass time.
