just wondering what you guys out there think about this guy. hes the one that hosts all those police chase, etc, etc, shows.
he seems to glamourise police work a hullva lot. and he seems to know nothing.
for instance, i am watching one of his shows now and there was a hostage situation in Rio.
the offender was holding a knife to a young girls neck after she disturbed him breaking in. the police negotiate the knife off him, and then an officer comes up behind him holding his gun like the Duke while the guy uses the girl as a human sheild! theres also a huge crowd just meters away, no cordons, nothing. then about a million cops jump on the offender while the crowd cheers. Burnells comment? "A dangourus situation defused by the professionalisim of the local cops." my opinion of him is signifigantly lower now(not that it was high in the first place). i think Cartman would do a better job.
ok, ill stop rambling now.

Think about his audience. Probably blue collar educated non cop haters who like the action. To the pro he's a pogue making bucks off his trade. To the Hollywood crowd, an allie and smart mf making the big bucks. He is smart enough to know that it all ends someday so why not make as much as you can and bail. Retirment ain't cheap!

You must have been watching the same show as me Huey.

I liked the clip of the car chase when the bad guy loses it coming into a hairpin, falls out of the car. The Cop following also loses it and goes into a side on skid on grass at about 90 MPH, and misses that bad guy by a matter of inches.

Burnell then says something like, If it wasnt for the quick actions of the police officer in steering away from the bad guy, he would have been run over.

Anyone else ever lost control on grass at 90mph and been able to steer going side ways???

hahaha, still for Entertainment purposes only.........

man, some of those guys on that show are real dumbarses/ass's. damn that dude f*ucked that hairpin up! i liked the one a few ago when the chase went off road, Possum Bourne style(near SIDWAYS on the corners)!

First off, there were a number of incidents on some of the shows that were fake. They got caught and now sometimes you see "training" below in tiny letters. While the show has some entertainment value, they often dissect LE tactics for the whole world to see....not the best for the field officer.

Ugh — I was afraid it was the same guy. No doubt he and Heinrich Himmler would have gotten on famously. I'll give him his due on one point: I do like the uniforms (very practical and stylish!), but he's too egocentric to be able to function effectively as a public servant.

My prediction: ten years from now, he'll be long-forgotten as a sheriff and well-established as a "lifer" in some prison somehwere — either state or Federal!

If you think his current Police Pursuit shows are bad, dig out COPS circa 1989 and look at him & his Narc crew.

He used to work closely with Sheriff Nick Navarro of Broward County on COPS. A few years back he(Navarro) was charged and found guilty of embezzlement(must be a Florida/cuban thing). Will Burnell follow his comrade in arms?

And, the guy's a prick in person too. No good use for a glory hound like that in LE.

He did a show sometime back with a line with Navarro. Burnell is WA and Navarro FL.

uuhh guys, Multnomah County is here in Oregon. It is the county that Portland is in. Albeit it is close to WA, it is still right here in good old Oregon.

John Bunnell is frequently seen on COPS; during the shows I've seen, he was with the Multnomah County, Oregon, Sherrif's Department as a sergeant and lieutenant.

Later, I saw him identified as Sheriff Bunnell, but I never caught the name of the county.

I do like some of his smart-ass commentary on those chase shows; one incident occurred about five miles from my house, with the knucklehead in question plowing into an interstate light post. The light fixture came down and smashed in the top of this character's car, killing him.

Bunnell: "The lights went out on his criminal career".

William Salter- Are you perhaps thinking of tis guy? http://www.hegecountry.com/

That would be the one. Different self-styled celebrity Lord High Shire Reeve, same ego. Must have been too big to be contained within one individual.

Huey One Four- That's the guy. He has a show on Court TV called "Inside Cellblock F", or some such thing. His patrol unit looks more like a funny car than a cop car, and he's the self described "Toughest Sheriff in America".
Salter's "barbecue sauce" comment made me think of this guy immediately; he may be the first wave in a WWF/Running Man trend in LE.

You guys are mistaking Portland for Eugene. Eugene is where most of the trouble makers came from for the WTO riots in Seattle. Although Portland has it's share of tree huggin hippies, Eugene has cornered the market.

I was a deputy for MCSO, but now work for a large city in Multnomah Co. Just to clarify things, Bunnell was Sheriff for a brief period of time for Multnomah County. He worked for the agency for about 27yrs. He was never elected as Sheriff, but took the job when then current Sheriff, Sheriff Skipper, left due to illness. He retired when the term was over, and that's when he went on to his Hollywood fame.

I'll give the guy credit, he says some funny SH** on those programs.
