I track people on a daily basis. My training was all OJT though. I was lucky enough to be trained by one of the better trackers around. My agency does offer training to other agencies on tracking but it is for LE or Military only. There are, however, a few good books out there that deal with the basics of tracking and counter-tracking techniques if you're just fascinated with it. If you really want to learn how to track, the only way is to spend months and years out there doing it.

My $.02 worth:
Listen to Sharky reeeall carefully and take copious notes. His people could track a fart in a hurricane.
They impressed the hell out of us; can't hold their liquor though...

Sorry, Mr. Administrator, but someone has to learn something from someone! You are not born with knowledge unless mayby you are? That is my .03cents worth to you! What are your credentials sir? Also OJT is a "cop-out" so-to-speak! So tell me Sharky(The above is not directed to you) from where & whom did you receive your training? I see from your profile that you are probably BP? Did you know "Jack Kearny", Terry Hutt, David Scott-Donnelan? Just curious?

Mantracker,
Stop reading between the lines. There was no hidden message in my response, period.
I was simply providing a definition for the abbreviation Sharky used as most here have brain freezes when common abbrv's are used.
As far as my experience with the subject ... I have none. Case closed.

Jeff:
My mistake! I thought it to be the begining of a "new guy" flame! Again my apoligies for jumping the gun. As you well know, their are alot of personalities on the web these days and because you can't see their face and hear their tone you don't really know what you're dealing with.
Just for FYI my training came from Terry Hutt(deceased Border Patrol Agent) & T.T.O.S.
My apoligies everyone!

No apologies required Mantracker. You nailed it on the head when you said the tone isn't very well traveled when paired with the World Wide Web of Deception. Take care.

Tracker, I am a BP Agent. I won't post the Agents name here who trained me without his consent as he is still very much active in the game. I don't really consider myself an expert tracker but I will say that not too many get away from me. I don't really think that is a testimonial to my tracking skill but more of a testimonial to their lack of counter-tracking skills. I have only been with this agency for 3 years so I don't know any of the names that you mentioned. I'm sure that if you were trained by one of our better trackers that you are way ahead of the game. I will stand by what I said though. If you want to learn how to really track you have to be out there doing it. It's not something that is learned in a matter of days. BTW, who do you work for and why such a strong interest in tracking? No flame, just curious.

LMAO!
Okay, you guys left it open......
Reminds me of the pioneers who came upon this native american laying with his ear to the ground. When asked what he could determine, the native american responded, "Wagon train pass by here this morning. 15 horses, 32 men on foot, and 17 oxen with them." The pioneers, amazed at the response, asked the native american, "How do know all of that???" The native american replied, "They all run me over."
Ba-dum-bum.....ching.

Sharkey:
I can respect that! Terry hutt was former Border Patrol way back when. He taught at our state academy the basics & advanced tracking skills there. Later I attended a "Tactical Tracking" class which is a different ballgame. For instance... the four corners manhunt still going on which I'm sure you know about. Tactical Tracking is tracking in a 4-5 man team that is armed to the teeth. TacTrac would be used to find them immediately after they fled into the mountains & killed that officer. We would continue to track until we captured him or he was killed. We are not a "hunter-killer team", we are like a SWAT Team that is loaded for a minimum of 2 days in the bush. The FBI has now gone to this type of tracking and their HRT's are attending my current instructor's classes. The recent graduates are working the four corners & Eric Rudolph manhunts as we speak. Yes, Rudolph is still alive, in the mountains of N.C., as of last june. He is very good at counter tracking. Then again in that type of situation you do not use hundreds of LEO's and walk in a line through the bush hoping to flush him out. Also, tracking in the desert is completely different than tracking in the forest of my area or the Pacific Northwest. I don't beleive I could do well in the desert. In the forest it would be different because that is where we train. Counter tracking skills are not hard to learn either and it seems that as we go along we are finding smarter criminals who bail out into the bush and end up getting away from the K-9's. Getting a dog off of your trail is not that hard to do. Basically, I guess what I'm saying is that I track alot but not as much as you do, and honestly I wouldn't want to be you because if I'm calling this right, you usaully track by yourself and sometimes at night. With "Mules" carrying drugs back and forth across the fence you are in much more danger that I am with my 4 man team. I really respect the job you do and am grateful that their are guys like you around that can do that job day & day out. Here is a website you might be interested in looking at when you get a chance:

Go to www.osinetwork.com. (http://www.osinetwork.com.) Dave Henderman is one of the best around in tactical tracking and scout operations. He will be conducting a seminar at the International Special Operations Challenge in Lake City, Florida in July.
