What is the general waiting period for hiring someone with speeding tickets on their driving record for your agencies? I’ve heard that normally it is 3 years since you have had a moving violation, some state police agencies 5 years. I ask because I was stupid and got an 81 in a 65 ticket the other day, I was driving on a deserted interstate in a faster car than I was used to and stopped paying attention to the speed I was going. I’m not condoning it, just saying what happened. I usually don’t speed, at least not anywhere near that excessive. This is the second speeding ticket on my record, the other about 2 years ago. I’ve also heard that some agencies don’t have a set rule, just take into account the total applicant and if their driving record indicates consistently unsafe driving. Just looking for a heads up.

Previous experience............our general rule was "excessive traffic violations" in a three year period. Example: 3-5 moving violations accompanied with an accident or two in a 3 years. I would not think one speeding ticket every two years would be that big of a henderance unless the rest of your background would provide other reasons to believe you would be potiental problem. Alot of departments use your driving record to estimate the insurance cost increase of adding you as an employee. Although I do understand some departments in the midwest and northeast are not as forgiving....Someone else can address that one.

Around here unless it's a Personal Injury
accident which you left the scene...A mere
civil infraction can be respectfully explained as you used poor judgement...And you know everyone does it but http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/biggrin.gif
you just got caught...Just be remorseful when you talk about...it...Good Luck!!!

cavscout - seriously, like Recon and Watsy said, it really boils down to the individual agencies policies.

Well, what was explained to me in the process of filling in all those Personal History Statements was that the background investigators are — generally speaking — simply looking for honest disclosure, even as far as insisting that you list all violations you can remember, even if they're no longer on your official record.

When we entered on duty for Border Patrol, one of our guys had five that the instructors knew about and he got a letter from the chief in his file stating that if he got one more in the next year he was out. In the four years since, that guy has wrecked two Broncos and one Suburban. Makes you wonder what can get you fired from the government.
