Does anyone have a wristop device that they prefer over others? I'd like to find one that gives me all of the above without being GPS enabled. Speed and distance would be the priority, afterall I do own compass and can generally manage to figure out my bearing! or lack thereof!

The Foretrex 101 isn't much bigger than some of the watches you people wear, certainly lighter, and it's got all of the above. I've used one for years. You might just drop $100 and go with it, unless you've got some sort of aversion to GPS.

To think out loud: Is it possible to have a device which calculates your speed without using GPS to do so?

You would have to have what is commonly referred to as a 'pod' which attaches to your foot and measures your stride.

My only aversion to GPS is that it can't be used in many of the races that I'm looking to do.

Ahh yes. I see. Well, you can always get a bike computer for the bike sections.
