Hey guys I was just wondering, is Level III the norm, or do departments dictate what level of armor their officers can where? The reason I ask is I was talking to one of the DOD officers for the base I work on and he said that they are not allowed to where the chicken plate insert. This is the best place I know for a wide range of experience and different departments. I have too say that I hope you gents tell me that Level II is the exception to the rule and not the norm. Thanx in advance.

Doc, it will ultimately depend on department budgets, but I have seen more Level III than anything else. It's nice to see that officer safety is again becoming a factor in the minds of the bean counters.

bd
13 April 2001, 00:40
Doc,

The minimum level you need to wear should stop the ammunition you have in your sidearm. I personally wouldn't say that level III is the norm, but it offers the most protection in soft armor. Once you start going into level VI, that's where the ceramic starts.

Take care and be safe,

Heh heh, you mean level IV don't you? Just kidding my bro. I wear a IIA Second Chance with a softpak and 2 chicken plates. My IIA will stop anything the level III will stop and weighs less and is cooler in the summer. That's alot more important in my current line of work than it was when I was riding around in my Crown Vic. I wear 2 chicken plates because I seem to be a fuckin shots fired magnet although they haven't managed to hit me yet.

Are you implying Military Humvees are bullet resistant?? Only the MP models are, but the new M1113's and M1114's.. Now they may stop bullets. Hell, they even have AC..

The Guys I hang with at the Dept. near here
have all taken there "chicken plates" out,
because they heard of an Officer getting hit
by a .22 under his chin after the rnd
bounced off his chicken plate.

I would like to here what the rest of you
LE guys think about that.
I did some testing after they told me about it.
I now use a1/16th stainless plate in mine .
it is tough enough to stop anything .380 and
under before it hits kevlar but also gives
enough to dent and prevent riccochets of
a .22 .
I carry a 10mm Glock stuffed with Corbons,
but I haven't tried that load on a old vest yet.
Mine is level III ,but thats only because
thats what the
local PD Swat Team gave me for helping
there snipers pro bono.
Don't leave home without it!

be safe!

Hey bd, take your bricks over to that other string http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/biggrin.gif, it's looks like it's about to code again http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/tongue.gif. Just wanted to say thanx for the posts, I have to admit that I screwed up on my original question though. When I said the DoD officers weren't allowed inserts that was wrong, they are just not issued them but can buy them if wanted. I also noticed this morning going into the gate that while the DoD guys have armor on that none of the Navy MP's did. I guess that since they only do base security for three years they're not worth the investment from the navies point of view. My neighbor is one of the MP's so I'm going to ask him tonight. Anyway thanx again, stay safe and keep you heads down.

As far as chicken plates go, well, lets just say that I don't wear it because I'm worried about a .22. It's those rifle rounds that concern me.

I will grace this thread with one of my original sayings:

There's only one bullet with your name on it, there's a thousand other ones that are addressed "To Whom It May Concern".

I recommend Level III with the AK-47 soft insert. I wore a Level IV 2 1/2 years; sucked and couldn't run far, but I could take a lickin' and keep on tickin'.

You may quote me (remember, there's two s's in a**hole). Hey, it worked for grllcop...

Uhhh, Tracy, if you happen to find one floating around with my name on it could you FED-EX it to me so I can put it in a safe deposit box or something? That sure would be nice to be able to stop wearing this damn vest all the time. http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/biggrin.gif

The norm around here is a IIA vest. At my old dept., we were issued hard trauma plates, but I was leery of wearing mine. The ol' "bullet in the chin" urban myth USMC mentioned above looks like it might be completely feasible with the plate made for a chick vest, since it's bent like a "V". But it adds a cup size!! LOL And while guys have like 2 measurements to worry about it, it takes a custom fitting at Victoria's Secret to get a chick vest the right size. My old LT threatened to post my measurements on the wall, the bastard. I told him to put 2 inches beside the "nipple to top of duty belt" measurement. MWAHAHAHA. My last vest was a hand-me-down from a former female officer while mine was on order. I'm 5'6, 135, and doing alright in the chest region (if I do say so myself), and she was 5'2 and flat chested. Damn thing fit like a sports bra.

Prince George's County (MD) PD did some fairly extensive testing on the hard trauma plate issue. While it's not a likely event, it is certainly possible depending upon the angle of deflection. Consider, for example, a proned out suspect suddenly firing up at you or a perpetrator shooting from beneath a stairwell as you're coming down the stairs. I think grrlcop's point about female vests is certainly valid as well.

That being said, I have never heard of a documented case of this actually happening. If anyone knows of one, please post. Thanks and be safe.

On our department we are issued "point Blank" IIA's. I went out and purchased a Level III. I've worn it for over 2 years now and have gotten use to it. It was a pain initially but now it is very comfortable to wear. I even wear it ot Brown's games in the winter for extra insulation(yes for protection too). Level III's have gotten exponentially better at comfort within the last 2 years. Try on a "Second Chance" or "Safariland" and you'll feel the difference.

Negative ghostrider. Luckily they took those pieces of crap away and gave us choices between Second Chance, ABA, Safariland and a couple of others. I have the Second Chance 8th Generation thing. Cant even remember what it's called but they just came out with it last year. It's the next generation after the Monarch series. I'm quite satisfied with it. Good to hear from you.

For concealable vests, II & IIA seems to be the norm locally. Some of wear the newer IIIA's, which are getting pretty light & flexible. For more serious work, it's III and the hard plates are optional.

A thought on the trauma plates in concealable vests...
An incoming round may or may not ricochet upward off the plate. However, how much blunt trauma protection will the new "soft plates/ inserts" give against steering columns? Or knives?
I'll stick with that hard 5"x8" insert on the off chance that I'm more likely to wreck my car. We had one of our guys take a light pole head on, some years back, at 50mph. The insert had a perfect impression of the center of the steering wheel / column. Granted, pre air bag, but it made a big impression on me.

We get issued this nice little level III from U.S. Armor. It's only about 10lbs (until you add the 30lbs Chicken plate). It doesn't have one for the back. I guess uncle suger figures that if you have your back turned, you're runnin', and deserve to be shot. The plate is rated for a single 7.62. Unfortunatly, They have been known to travel in groups.

Newkirk it is one thing to try and impress the twins with a gig that has already been done. It is another to do it so that it has to be manually translated because the skippy little program BD sent will not catch all the characters.

Yes, BD if you want them to know the truth...
I will tell............ The chicken scratch was not intentional. See he was trying to reply on this page, while this little blonde was sitting in his lap...and....well...things got out of hand. SOMETHING kept bumping the keyboard and there you have the chicken scratch. Those are not breaks in text. They are actually the shifting of positions......
atleast that is what she said when I ask why he would not answer the phone. Gives a whole new meaning to Cybersex.............

about 6 months ago i took an old level 2 vest that belonged to a retired PO that had been in his shed for approx. 4 years (after retirement-he wore it for 8 years prior) and it was partially wet from rainwater and the elastic straps had long since rotted off. I brought it to our range and put it through a rigorous testing process. (shot everything in my unit at it) and was surprised at the results.I shot a 22, 9mm,40cal,45cal and 12ga at it and it swallowed them all. Ball/ Hydroshock/hollowpoint handgun/ slug/00buck shotgun. I would hate to be wearing it during the 12ga slug test but it did take it. The second 12ga slug shot was at the upper edge of the shock plate and it split the plate and drove the edge of the plate into my CPR dummy who volunteered to wear the vest. The vest did take every round even though the 12ga slug and 00buck did make possibly fatal indentions in my crash test dummy.

OK, I almost hate to keep this thing on original topic, but our unit is getting Second Chance Level 2 Monarchs. For measuring purposes, they say go 1" above the service belt. Would that be roughly the same for a web belt? I'm guessing it would be, but I figured some of you would know for sure from using both.

Best line I've heard on the "more than a mouthful" theory:

My youngest boy's godmother is an ADA in the Bronx. She is to say the least, a well endowed ass kicker. From a distance, we used to give her hell that in the Bronx, a breast is only the right size if it is able to clog a toilet.

As for her ability to intimidate, she's sitting in her car one day, a guy comes up to her window and tells her he has a gun and he's going to rape her. She looks at him, says "Let me see your damn gun". When he starts hemming and hawing (with obviously no weapon) she starts to get out as she tells the guy "I'm gonna kick your ass". The guy books a couple blocks, she follows him with her car, he ducks in an apartment building and gets lost.

Now that I think about it, this sound almost like something Kristen or Watsy would do, up to the point where the guy gets away. I'm sure if it was one of them, the guy would either be a screaming hood ornament or a bullet sponge by the end of the story. Feel free to mentally picture your own happy ending.

I love the concept of the Institution of Marriage...Now that I am divorced and dating
I have a theory - the guy can come over and
play slap and tickle...He can have a couple

The bullet proof vest stays of the couch next to the bed and the flashlite/recharger screwed into the bed rail are NOT negotiable things that can be changed...If that does not send him running...there's a chance we might hit it off...

The problem in Texas is called "Common Law Marriage" depending on which lawyer you talk to as little as one weekend can cost you
