The Follow me patch will soon be gone, say it isn't so !

MCOE patch represents both Armor and Infantry

When Fort Benning becomes the Maneuver Center of Excellence, many Soldiers here will no longer wear the Follow Me patch. The Institute of Heraldry solicited design submissions for a new patch, and Chaplain (Col.) Glenn Davis, post chaplain, created the winning Shoulder Sleeve Insignia.

Davis combined aspects of the Armor and Infantry patches to create the MCOE patch. The shape, for example, is an inversion of the Follow Me shield. It represents a spearhead and is reminiscent of the triangular shape of the Armor patch.

“We talk about being the point of the spear, at the front of the battle engaged in combat,” Davis said, “so the Armor and Infantry colors make up the tip of that spear.”

The lightning bolt, symbolizing the power and speed of the Armor branch, and the Infantry bayonet are crossed in the center of the patch. Davis said his goal was to capture the history and honor of both branches.

The five-sided section at the bottom of the patch signifies the Pentagon, from which the two branches project. It is red to symbolize sacrifice. A star at the top was added by The Institute of Heraldry to designate Fort Benning as a center of excellence.

David Stieghan, the post command historian, said the original Infantry and Armor patches will still be worn by Soldiers of those branches, but the new patch will identify those affiliated with the Maneuver Center of Excellence. The patch will be worn when Fort Benning officially transitions to the Maneuver Center of Excellence.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is a replica of the shoulder patch with a curved tank track at the base that bears the motto “One force, one fight.”

“In four words, it sums up the combined mission of the two branches,” Stieghan said. “They’re still separate, but they have one function in combat, and that is to support each other in battle.”

Ft. Benning is gay so it should be a good fit. It will always be the "swallow me" patch to me.

Well, the patch looks cool. The Padre did a nice job of blending the Armor and Infantry symbology.

Patch does look cool, but Maneuver Center of Excellence sounds...corporate. trendy. sterile.

How about "Warfare Central School District", "Progenitor of Hurt", "Birthplace of Badass"...anything but COE.

uh... the diagonal lightning bolt is usually indicitive of the Signal Corps. Am I just ignorant of Armor?

Greenhat
14 March 2008, 22:49
I'm pretty sure that the various armor division patches usually included a diagonal lightning bolt in them like the 2d AD's patch.

What's wrong with Fort Beginning? It's just Benning with a GI thrown in.

That patch looks like it should be OPFOR or something. Guess it's the star . . .

Looks kinda "Star Trekish".

"Maneuver Center of Excellence" sounds crappy. Even coporate, how about the "Maneuver Center of Bad MotherF%^&*s" or "School of Shooting and Moving"!

+1 on the Maneuver Center of Excellence sounding gay. Sounds like change for change sake, w/ a whole lot of PC thrown in.

I'm sorry Tracy, going to have to disagree. That patch is a gay upside down Benning patch with way too much armor in it.

Guess this follows the changing of the Benning Motto from "Follow Me" to "Quit Shoving". :D

The fact that they basically flipped the Follow Me patch shape upside down does not sit right with me. Comes across like flying a US Flag upside down.

Of course the whole thing is gay, but it would be a bit more palatable if the patch was flipped the other side up, and keeping with some of the proper Heritage.

+1....patch is gay.

Maneuver Center of Excellence is gay too....this feels redundant for some reason:D . I guess they felt the need to "keep up" when PLDC changed to Warriors Leader Course, or whatever the hell it's called. Gay, gay, gay.

the Center of Excellence thing is generally made up/assigned to departments/divisions in corporate american by people that have little clue about what actually goes on in that department.

Dorks.

Why not just put a little M48 tank on the bottom of the old patch and change it to "Follow Us"?

Personally I think it's a slap in the face to every infantryman who has gone through Sand Hill. If it ain't broke don't fix it! This damn country keeps changing things to accomidate every one else's wants and needs. WTF is wrong w/ the "FOLLOW ME" patch/post....

Harmony Church... Sand Hill... it made no difference.
We ate the same shit and sucked the same smoke.
The only time any of us were ever in the barracks was to clean them anyway.

Harmony Church folks like to bitch and brag because at Sand Hill, the buildings were newer.
So what?
That just mean more shit for us to clean.
It's not like we had TV's and foot massages... it was still open bay barracks that we never saw.
The Harmony Church folks just needed something to snivel about. :D

That patch is all set to add the Field Artillary to it (the red is already incorporated). Could we truly get a manuever arms training post that integrates the 3 combat arms from the very start?

I never said anything about the Sand Hilton er....... I just wanted to throw it out there. I guess reading the post about Paris Hilton's barracks made me think that the new OSUT joes will never have to come face to face with one of those big ass cockroaches on fire guard. I met one on the stairs, shined my flashlight on it, it didn't run away, so I cracked it one with my helmet liner (another thing of the past) and I think I only pissed it off.

I may have resided at Sand Hilton but I didn't spend much time there, becuase 2/58 was on the edge of range rd we were always out in the field...lol

Everyone has mentioned the RED and the BLUE, what about the GOLD (Yellow). Maybe the Padre doesn't know what it stands for, he just copied colors. I bet the Cav guys feel they really got slapped down, they didn't even get mentioned.
I agree, it sucks.

The "Maneuver Center of Excellence" is just following the model;

Fort Lost in the Woods is the "Maneuver Support Center of Excellence" with the MP, Chemical and Engineer Schools there.

Fort Rucker is sure to become the "Aviation Center of Excellence"

Fort Sam is now the Uniform Services Health Institute or something like that.

It's all really a result of BRAC-

The only thing that really pisses me off is that the Armor Branch as well as 'Cavalry' 'grew' out of the Infantry. Horse infantry (Cav) in the Indian Wars (should I say "Native American Freedom Fighters" to be PC?), Motorized infantry in WWI, then armored infantry then you couldn't pry the f@#kers off the god damned things even to take a dump. I'll really blow a gasket when they start wearing their Stetson around post like at Fort Hood; hell they (Shinseki and Tilley, both f!@king tankers) already took the beret from the Regiment...

Now that they've 'come home to roost' the patch has to change to prevent hurting their pore widdle ole hearts and makin' em cry..

just my .02

When you get right down to it, there are only two branches - Infantry, and Infantry Support.

Let 'em roost and cry 'bout that . . . :D

Holy Crap!

They should just name the training center after the name The Simpsons gave it...
"The Killbot Factory"
Hell, I'd re-up if they'd name it that.

"Just miles from your doorstep, hundreds of men are given weapons and trained to kill. The government calls it the Army, but a more alarmist name would be... The Killbot Factory."

Sure does, who's going there, Jerry's Kids? What a totally ghey, f'ked up name. Patch sux too.
Some officer came up with this BS, no doubt to change things from the way they were when he got there so that it looks like he actually did something to deserve that glowing OER......same idea as needing to change the term used to describe combat in cities every few years, MOBA, MOUT, FIBA........what a bunch of regular army crap. Cut the Officer Corp in half if this garbage is what they waste their time on dreaming up.

Benning's School for Boys, Class of '78.

Sounds like an award Homer Simpson got, "The award for achievement in the field of excellence". He got an awards show and everything. But sadly, it was a totally made up award, just like a lot of jobs in the military apparently.

There were Soldiers bitching about the 'gay' "Follow Me" patch back in the 50s when the SSI first came out. Before that, they were bitching about the 'gay' DUI in 1922.

Out of morbid curiosity, did anyone bring something new to the argument?
