I'm not much of an expert on human thought, but could somebody please explain to me why Hollywood constantly portrays SWAT as a team that will automatically kill anyone with a gun and will kill everyone in a hostage situation including the hostages?

Probally because New York City's Emergency Services Unit somehow manages to stay away from bad press. That could be because in NYC everyone is alittle more insensitive as a whole, and LA is the lawsuit capital of the world.

Probably for the same reason Hollywood exaggerates everything...the truth is pretty damn boring.

Well, if the hostages are killed, you don't have to worry about them and can concentrate on the bad guys. LOL...

I think Kristen (grrlcop) has nailed it; movies are, for the most part, make believe. Real life is often boring. Remember that one of the prime rules of sucessful movie watching (huh? does that make ANY sense) is the suspension of disbelief. Plus, in Hollywood and other Politically Correct places assertivness and agressive behavior is are just about the worst atributes a human can possess. "We must have an orderly and compliant society". When was the last time you heard the phrase: "Rugged Individualist" used in a compliment? I notice I am veering from the issue of Hollywood and SWAT, but my points are valid.

Amen to that Kristen. When one of my brothers boneheaded friends found out i was on our dept SWAT team he asked me the perverbial question. "Have you ever shot anyone." When i gave him my truthfull answer of thankfully no but i have come close a number of times he said.
"Damn that must suck. I thought yall always got to shoot."
My answer to him after a little thought was "well i wasnt able to trade the crown vic for a ferrari so i'm not on miami vice, i'm usually dont shoot my perps and then go home without doing the report so i'm not on Hunter and I usually dont call the guys i arrest scum so i'm not on TJ Hooker.
I guess he wasnt as ammused about my answer as i was. He hasnt talked to me since.

It may not have been the best movie ever produced, but Eddie Murphy's "METRO" earned my respect when Murphy told a new transfer, "SWAT is a life-saving organization." Very true.

That was one of the coolest posts ever, considering you used the words "Kristen", "bone", "swat", "suck", and "hooker", and never once made any type of suggestive remark.
I'm taking notes, here.

Hunter was awesome... I remember an episode where he gets in a foot chase, then the suspect flees in a waiting helicopter. No worries, Hunter shot down the helicopter... with a 9mm Beretta...
