View Full Version : RIP to a Korean War Veteran, my Dad

Some of you here may be aware that my dad has been sick for a while now. About a month ago, he was basically critical and then rallied just last weekend. It was great to see him rebound, full of good spirits and a love of life.

Last Tuesday he started a downward spiral and by Thursday afternoon he died. I was there with him, held his hand and stroked his forehead telling him it was ok to let go as he passed from this world. It would be an extreme understatement to say it was one of the most difficult things I've done in my life, but can say I am happy he is no longer suffering. And I'm blessed and forever grateful I could be there with him at the end.

I'd like to say something to all of you who are, or have, served. My father was proud of his service in the Army. He was a combat engineer with the 25th Infantry Division, "Tropic Lightning", in the Korean War and held deep respect for those who have carried the torch he passed along so many years ago. He always made it a point to tell me to be sure to thank all the guys and gals I've written over the years, and how proud he was to have been part of the Brotherhood.

So via this post...my father offers his final salute to all of you.

Rest in Peace Dad, I love you...
"Your baby girl"

During my tours during the Korean gig I read about the 25th ID doing good things. I read it in the Stars & Stripes, our channel for info on what was going on around us.

Your Father need stand back to anyone. Doing a gig in Korea was by far no picnic and my salute to those who served.

Rest in peace soldier. My blessings to his family.

Gypsy,

It's always sad to hear of a loss from our hero's of the past, more-so when it is closer to home, albeit through you on this site. Know that your fathers service does not go un-noticed, nor un-appreciated. It is men like your father that we, the current generation of soldiers, have looked up to and strived to emulate.

At times like these you can only hope that the family can understand that none of us are meant to be here forever and in so passing, a suffering has ended.

When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no tears in a gloom-filled room
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little but not for long
And not with your head bowed low
Remember the love that we once shared
Miss meÉbut let me go.
For this is a journey we all must take
And each must go alone
It's all a part of the master plan
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick of heart
Go to the friend we know
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds
Miss me ... but let me go.

Gypsy-
I am saddened to hear of the passing of your Father. But lightened at the fact that you were able to enjoy the company of a man you were obviously proud to have called "Dad".
May his memories grant you joy as he rests.

Gypsy,

I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm sure that your presence gave him comfort in his final days and moments.

My respect to your dad. He fought in a tough war, under very trying conditions. Fighting not only an fierce enemy but a fierce climate.

I will look skyward and return his salute, with the utmost respect. RIP, Soldier.

Ahh, thank you RGR.M. He may not have been a perfect man but then who is, (except for SOTB ;) ) and I loved him. Straight no BS shooter, always knew where you stood with him...I'm glad I'm so much like him. Or so says the family.

I only wish he could have lived to see an honor I'm to be awarded this Saturday night. It's the Order of the St. Joan d'Arc Medal for my work with a local Army NG Cavalry Troop, to be presented at their Squadron Ball on 29 March. I found out about this by accident and was humbled (coincidence...?) so told him about it. He said he was so proud... Well, I know he'll be there in spirit.
