Gents and Barbarians,
I am trying to assist an associate in tracking somebody. The only information on hand is full name and SSN.
1. Are there good reliable sources that can generate results with this info?
2. Is running a credit profile/ check a good way? If so, can it lead to problems for doing so?
3. Any other tips or advice is highly sought.
Just an FYI the last time I did any skip tracing/ investigative stuff was 95-98 when I was a bondsman and things have surely changed.

There are many free sites that help locate people via name.
This is one of the most accurate http://www.veromi.info/
http://www.intelius.com/ offers a pay service that will find the exact dude you are looking for if you have a SSN.

Used Intelius before to hunt up some old crew members before w/ a lot less info, it sucked paying though. Never heard any complaints or got sued.

SB,
Roger that. Thanks. I knew of Intelius, but have never used it I was hesitant to recommend it because it costs. We will use that as a start point and see what happens.

If you are trying to track somebody for reasons other than friendship then time is money. Paying a small amount to receive focused up to date accurate info is worthwhile vice spending time searching free databases.
If it's just for curiosity's sake then word of mouth/open source searches are fine if the dude isn't one of those who maintains a very low public profile.
Running a credit check is a good way, but it costs money as well even if you don't see the costs up front. Depending on the situation, it also leaves an electronic trail that could tip off the dude you're looking for. I know mine is set up to immediately notify me of any credit inquires and provides the who, what and where of the inquirer. Even without this trip wire set up the trail is easily reversed back.

It'll take some time to go through the states, but it's free to get good leads:

Try this: look for info on yourself.
I was able to get my DL# without much effort. That's the good part.
I'm not talking NICS...this was "pay a few bucks" Internet available information.
Without much information to start with at all, you could absolutely crawl up some one's ass. ...for any reason.
I'm not questioning present company in the least, I'm just sayin'.
Fucking yikes.

While setting up a reunion last year we used "zaba search" and had decent results using name and state mostly. No ssn.

NLN,
Which site were you referring to about getting the DL information? I have already done a search for myself as a test and there was definitely some info there to be had.
