Details are kinda sketchy right now but I justgot word of a friend of a friend who was a Deputy in South Central Colorado who was shot and killed yesterday. He was a CO and had just came to uniformed patrol. He picked up a TOT from the local PD and assumed that they had searched the subject. I dont know if they did or not. Regardless, the subject put his feet through the cuffs, reached in his pocket and got a handcuff key and took off his cuffs. He then went into his crotch and retreived a handgun. He shot the Deputy threee times in the back of the head through the cage. The vehicle wrecked out and the subject was able to get out of the vehicle. He then drug the Deputy out of the vehicle and shot him in the face and fled. I do not know if the subject has been apprehended or not. Nor do I know if the details are accurate. I was just told this over the phone by my ex-roommate. The Deputy was a friend of his. Stupid mistakes seem to kill more of us than anything else. If you put someone in your vehicle, SEARCH THEM YOURSELF! Even if they have been searched ten times already. It's your life!

I just read about it in the local paper here. The report says they were twin brothers (being transp. at the same time?)who are still at large. They carjacked a truck after murdering the Deputy, and then shot at responding Officers coming to the aid of the carjacking victim. Both also non-chalantly waved and smiled at the rescue ambulance units arriving to aid the Officers.

May God bless the fallen Deputy and his family.

I hope they bury both brothers far apart from each other at their funerals.

Dammit!

It's like losing family.

Please take this in the right context, but I'm sick of looking at floral wreaths, flag-draped coffins, and hearing bagpipe laments.

PLEASE.........watch your six out there, my friends.

Latest is that both suspects are in custody. Apparently a couple of park rangers stumbled onto them in the woods and ,not knowing about the incident, handcuffed them for their own reasons just before the SWAT team showed up. The SWAT guys apparently were not happy that the suspects were face down and handcuffed when they got there if you know what I mean. Received a phone call last night from another officer who works at the department there. Apparently the suspects shot the officer 8 times in the back of the head, once in the face, once in the chest and once in the lower right abdomen. Another officer was shot through the spine, which was severed. He is in critical condition and if he lives will never walk again.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of the officers.
I lost a really good friend I went through the acamdemy with, he died nearly the same way.
He picked up a DWI on the highway and there was a guy passed out in the back seat of the car so he put him in the back of the patrol car and headed to town. Since the guy was passed out he didn't search him.
On the way in the guy woke up, pulled a knife and reached over the seat and stuck him in the throat. (We didn't have cages then). He died at the door of the emergency room still sitting in his car.
I used to teach officer survival courses and it just kills me when we die because we do someting stupid.
The thing that kills us is the repetition of our jobs. We get to thinking its just a tail light or a transport but you never know.
Do we go home at night because were good and did everything right or do we go home at night because we were just lucky?? Remember watch the hands, its the hands that kill you.
