I got a nice folder on my trip to italy over the summer and was thinking about keeping it in my car either under my seat or in the glovebox incase i ever needed it. Do any of you know that carrying my knife about 2.5-3" is legal under california law?
the only thing that makes me want to carry it is a friends mom was hit by a drunk driver and her car flipped and exploded. She was pulled out by someone. I figure if i was in that situation i may be able to help someone else or help myself.

Nope. Only LAWs, AT4's and Stingers. What do you think? Concealed anything gets you a ride to one of California's most modern jail facilitys and the company of some of our finest citizens.

WTF? I know Kalifornia is a different World, but are you telling me you can't carry a pocket knife there? I guess my autos would be out of the question?

If you truly only want something to cut a seatbelt with, they make devices specifically made for such. And it being stuck under your seat likely would not help you much if you were involved in an accident. I would suggest buying one of the combination glass breaking/seatbelt cutting tools that can be found in a Galls catalog (or online) for around $20. It is far more useful and safer to use so you do not risk cutting yourself or the entrapped occupant. It also includes a console mount for easier access than under the seat. I can't speak for Cali, but here in Alabama a good measure is no blade longer than your pinky finger. As an officer I would have a hard time buying the "it's in case I have to cut somebody out" reason/excuse if I pulled you over and found it under your seat.

What if I presented my military ID to you?
I was told that here in TX it is legal for active and reserve component servicemen to carry just about any knife in uniform, in civilians, on duty, or off duty. Including autos!

OK, Somebody splain to me what the big deal is about knives...back in the Jurasic period when I was a Boy Scout we were required to have a knife at all times as part of "Be Prepared". I have carried an assortment of pocket and belt knives over the years, and have never had a problem with any LE regarding them. In addittion, if the State of GA sees fit to allow me to carry a concealed firearm, why would they have a problem with any knife I might choose to carry? As a collector I own a couple of Auto's but apparently there is some Federal prohibition about carrying them unless I have only one hand...no, I am not kidding!
It is my understanding that if you carry a fixed blade knife in a sheath on you belt there are no regulations as to length of blade or anythin else. Again, somebody make some sense of this please.

I spent time in court when I was about 21 fighting a weapons charge. I was stopped for a traffic violation, when asked if I had any weapons in the car I answered "yes, I have my pocket knife on me" The Officer got me out of the car, patted me down, put me in his car, searched mine (nothing in the car) took me down to the station, Finger printed me and then gave me a ticket for lligal weapon, and then drove me back to my car. I was so stunned I didnt even ask why. The reason for all this is it is leagle in the state of WA. to carry a knife, but, the city of Bellevue has an ordanance against it.
The Judge about bust a gut when he saw what was going on. Explained the ordanance to me and said good day. So the moral of the story to me was, I can carry my sidearm, but not my little folding pocket knife. Politics scare me.

That is why you carry a Belt/Pocket clip knife. The clip and the end of the knife are visible while it is clipped to the inside of the pocket. Therefore it is not concealed.
To all the States,Counties,Citys, towns and jurisdictions that won't let a American Citizen carry a pocket knife. F#$K You!

Texas: Carry is restricted to 5" or less, single-edge, unless engaged in a sporting activity such as hunting/fishing/camping. No restrictions on plain-view vs. concealed.
Oregon (at least when I was growing up there back in the '70s): No restrictions under Oregon Revised Statutes on blade-length whatsoever, but blades longer than 3½" had to be carried in plain sight.
Some municipalities may be more restrictive in both cases. E.g.: San Antonio seems to have a hair up its collective backside WRT locking blades (I don't own any other kind of folder!)
OTHOH, the well-used Goldblatt 14" steel finishing trowel I used to regularly carry within arm's reach never drew a second glance or a question even once.
Grunt: I regret having to inform you that the intel you were given was bogus. Off-duty, we're under that same rules as everyone else.
fish78: You've effectively answered your own questions. The Kalifornia Soviet Socialist Republic is neither another state nor a foreign country — it's an alien world.

This is why we have a crazy little thing called officer discretion. If I have an encounter with a reasonable, law-abiding citizen who has a knife that is larger than allowed to be carried by law on them, I'm not going to screw with them. If, however, I have a nut/asshole with a history of assault or menacing with a little pocket knife on them, I will give them the necessary grief. Why? Because I can http://www.socnetcentral.com/ubboard/biggrin.gif.

Why do I have to keep entering my user name and password? I lost a great reply!
Bottom line: the laws regarding knife carry are nonsensical and confusing!

Thomas: Right on bro!!! (a swiss army with a locking blade my pops got me on some island or something in my bag and a mil stainless pocket knife in my pocket all the time (although the US one is currently hanging on a slit it made in the edge of the 6 of red stripe im working on to open the bottles)
Kristen: you don't see a problem in a society based on rule of law with "officer discretion?" The easiest way to enslave a people is to make everything illegal and selectively enforce the law and all that? Anyway, nothing is intrinsically (sp?) a weapon until you use it as one, in both a literary and legal sense. If you stick a pen in someones eye it is a weapon, if not it is a writing implement or perhaps you use it as a paperweight at times or as a tie clip (way cool when i was in HS to keep your pen horizontal clipped to your tie and the seam or your shirt) The correct answer to do you have anyweapons in your car is no unless you are planning on assaulting the officer... "There are no dangerous weapons. There are only dangerous men." --Sgt. Zim "Starship Troopers" --Robert A. Heinlein. Just because something can cause damage doesn't make it a weapon, a gun that AD/ND's and injures someone is not a weapon, just as a can of gasoline that catches fire and explodes isn't. Either way as always stay safe and be careful. (and eat good food, belgian fries with mango chutney mayo from Pommes Frites on 2nd ave come to mind)

I am not going to bother explaining it to someone who thought wearing a pen clipped horizontal on their shirt was a fashion statement. Let's just say that oral sex fits the description of sodomy under state code here in Alabama. It's archaic, but police have no say over what laws are on the books and that haven't been changed in 100 years. Perhaps you would care for us enforcing zero tolerance on blow jobs between a husband and wife? Or you and your...whatever?
Alan, that's true under normal circumstances, but not after a serious accident.
Tracy, your previous "jobs" don't frighten me near as much as the fact that you can wear hot pants with that kind of shameless elan. Any truth to the rumor that a fellow SOCNETizen now has them in his possession? And did he ask you not to wash them before they were mailed? I won't tell you about the disturbing mental images that creates...

Wench, stop hitting on The Chief. He's still got a few months yet to become a senior citizen, so he's too young for you anyway. http://www.socnetcentral.com/ubboard/tongue.gif
Beside, The Great Red-Headed One in a pair of UDTs has nothing in the "disturbing" department compared to some of the other photos taken that day. You want vomit inducing? Try picturing Poly, Sharky, Joe, and DFC in tight black leather dresses cut WAAAAAAAAAAY too far above the knee. As much as the lye stung initially, I was glad that it burned that image off my corneas. I still have yet to repay the horror to the party that sent me that pic. In ussr, you could carry a knife, only guns not allowed. i used to carry a knife which if you press the button, the 6" blade shoots out. i was very young and we used to play games by throwing the knife at some targets. we also used slingshots.
in usa, i also used to carry knife to school but i obviously never threatened anybody. and if i were stopped by a cop and asked if i had any weapons, i'd say no. because i don't use it for that. i also when i go to the beach, leave my knife next to my bags. so when i go swimming, no one steals anything
