Service in either of these unit's is on a volunteer basis after at least one years service in another arms corp related unit for Commando's or a years service in any other corp for the SASR.
Good luck.

The most important thing to have is a desire above all else to be a part of the Special Forces community. Your devotion is what will get you through.
You will go through more pain than you can imagine if you really intend to go through with this, not trying to put you off or anything.
Physical fitness is where it is. Read;
Fighting fit - by Adrian Wheale - it's a british book, but is equally applicible to Aussies, I should know my brother is in 1 company and I have friends in 2 coy.
You should expect to be able to speed march at 5-6 km/h, know your weapons by instinct, know as much as you can about navigation and field craft as you can - because you wont have time to learn when you get there.
But if you can enddure some of the most challanging hardships of any military course anywhere in the world - you will earn privilages never though of by the common pongo.
Best regards,

Basic training for the Commandos is as follows:
1. Commando Basic Training Course. Course content - focuses on the enhancement of individual skills and commando team/section tactics in close-country and an urban evironment.
2. Special Forces Basic Airborne Course.
Course content - The course qualifies soldiers for static-line parachuting for land and sea descents.
3. Commando Amphibious Operators Course. Course Content - The course teaches the soldier how to operate the zodiac in a tactical environment.
4. Commando Basic Roping Course. Course content - The course teaches soldiers basic roping and rappelling skills (cliff and helicopter).
5. Specialist Skills. Course Content - The soldier must complete either a Combat First Aid course, Regimental Signals Course, or a demolitions course.
Once the soldier has completed the basic training cycle, there are a number of advanced skills that can be undertaken. Some of these include:
Mountaineering Operations
Combat Survival
Unarmed Combat
Tactical Reconnaissance
Sniping
Advanced Parachuting
Heavy Weaponry
Selection is tough, the Commandos have the same selection as the SASR, but only 3 weeks long. While candidates for the SASR have another 3 weeks of selection.

SASR have a training package to follow before selection that you can get once in the Army.
