How many years are needed to serve in the regular army, before becoming eligable to join aussie SAS? I know the Brits need three years.

In my experiance there is no minimum if you've got what it takes they'll take you. There is no minimum age or time you must do.I myself have never tried for SAS but I have served in 2 infantry battalions in the RAR and I personally know of blokes that have spent little as 6 months in a battalion go to SAS further more there are army reservist that make it in.I'v called around to back up what I'm saying and there is no minimum ,you just have to be trade qualified in your current job within the ADF before you can apply

When you say that even reserves can try out, is this any reservist? Or is it only from 1 Commando? While on the topic of 1 Commando,
is this unit comparable to Britains 21 & 23
SAS units or not?

Can permanent residents enter the reserves, and if so how does one apply for selection to 1 Commando?

Ryan any male member of the Australian Defence force(army navy RAAF) can try for SAS that includes any reservist. As for the comparing 21&23 SAS to 1Commando.I don't think you can.Believe it or not I do have a very good friend in 21 from my former Battalion and from what he tells selection was pretty intense.1 Cdo are an amphib unit so concentrate on that I know those fellas put alot of time and effort but they are not the same as 21&23.Alot of 1Cdo makes the SASR though so I don't think they can be discounted in any form, good soldiers.

Angel you have to talk to someone in army recruiting as they know all about recruiting policy.

My brother is in 1 Commando Coy and I wouldn't describt it as just amphib.

And selection is very comparable between the Australian commandoes and Brit SAS.

Would you compare the Aussie SAS with commandos?Which one is harder.I would compare the SASR with the SAS as they have the same roles.I spent a week over at 1cdo playing on there toys whilst in Regs, their commander at the time was my old platoon commander from Singleton.Quote 'The cdo's are a over the horizon amphib strike force working mainly in platoon or company size groups'Unquote.

As for staff ,the Brit staff they would all be SAS,only some of the 1Cdo staff are.The Brit staff would also pass on a vast amount of operational knowledge. The only way you could compare the 2 is that they are reserves.
Oh the Brit 21&23 SAS get to send their blokes on ops while our cdo's bob around port phillip bay and Syd Harbour.SAS have a different role to CDo my mates in 4RAR call themselves water babies. And of course they (1cdo)do other types training. And they put in time ,effort and dedication which has got to be respected.Fit blokes also.
Its like comparing apples and oranges.
To alot of professionals in the reg army ,the SASR is the only SF force we have.

It's worth pointing out at this stage that the Australian commandoes were formed by serving British SBS officers.

I know one who was invited to go, but was instead ordered out to the middle East.

With that said - you can immediatly see a difference in concept between SAS and commando.

Also worth pointing out is that there are female commando support specialists - but not operators.

Candidates for 21 & 23 have to do an almost identical selection to their regular counterparts. They just have to do it on the weekends so it takes a lot longer.

Surely 1 Commando is similar to the Royal marine's commando reserves?

I remember reading somewhere that prospective candidates are issued a fitness warning order to allow them to prepare for selection. Anyone know if this is available on the WWW or can send me a copy of the contents?

In the view of the ADF, our special forces are the SASR, 1st Cdo, 4 RAR, 126sig and 152sig. Obviously they have different roles but in relation to who is more elete, the SASR takes the lead. If you look at the selection criteria you'll see that the SASR have slightly harder criteria the the other units. If you want to know about the Cdos then visit the 1st's website. The information I recieved about selection from recruiting indicates that all you have to do is be a member of the ADF and apply for selection. Then you have to go through the selection process and the training. If any of the special forces guys are willing to give me some advice on how to one day join the special forces myself then I would really appriciate an E-mail.
