I'm guessing his family just got the terminology incorrect and meant the PST.

More likely the reporter got it confused. It all sounds the same to them.

I had a friend at "A" school do the same thing. They worked on him for an hour.

***Note to all who think that this type of training will get your prepped***

They will give you plenty of practice at BUD/S. It is plain stupid to try it on your own.

Sorry if I'm out of my lane here, but what they may have been talking about is Naval Special Warfare is making a huge recruiting push and setting up display tables, booths, whatever you want to call it, at a lot of triathlons, adventure races, etc. Having Team guys, and sometimes SWCC and EOD guys there to answer any questions potential applicants may have. At some of these events, they will hold "mock" PSTs. However, I've never heard it called SEALs triathlon assessment. Regardless of what it's called, sad situation leaving behind a pregnant wife and two year old, when it could've and should've been avoided. My prayers are with the family.

X2. That can't be stressed enough. And being that this is the NSW Prep forum I think it is a good place to highlight it. Mentoring SEAL hopefuls through a Navy program I get a lot of questions from kids asking me "how do I prepare myself for the 50 meter underwater swim." My answer is always the same - don't. I am not aware of the actual statistics (if they are even kept) but I am sure there are not many guys that get perf rolled out for failing the 50 M underwater. It is just one of those things you do when you get there. You will either have the MENTAL DRIVE to do it to completion or you will not. Nothing will prepare you for it. Just like the guys who try to "prepare" for the cold water. It is stupid. Don't do it. Also not to mention when you do the 5o M in BUD/S, there is a BUD/S instructor that swims directly above you on the surface watching you the entire time and when guys blackout (which happens a lot) they will pull you to the surface to save you. With those precautions in place it is beyond me why anyone would try this on their own. It is sad this had to happen to this young man, but let it be a lesson to others. If you have the mental drive to do it, you will do it. I (and probably 95% or more of the other SEALs on this board did nothing prior to BUD/S to prepare for the 50 M underwater test) - hell I did not even know there was such a test until I read it in the BUD/S Warning Order a few months before I went to BUD/S. So again you will have time to get ready in indoc. Don't try to do this stuff on your own. Prep yourself with pushups, flutter kicks, running and swimming. Not with tested evolutions like this.

Amen GW. During Indoc period they do a crawl, walk, run approach. You start off w/ 25m, then 35m, then the 50m. Like GW said, it's all in the head. WHETHER YOU THINK YOU CAN, OR CAN'T, YOU'RE RIGHT!! There were guys who passed out, but were grabbed quickly as stated above. Anyone who saw Class 234 on Discovery Channel saw that! If you break it down, you're holding your breath 30-40 seconds...THATS IT!! It's the brain housing group that allows the self doubt to set in. Very sad a man died attempting this. RIP. Ok...back to the armory.

You would be surprised no matter how many times you tell some of these guys they STILL think they have to train for it.
