View Full Version : Nephew is shipping for BCT
I just wanted to take a minute and tell ya'll how proud I am of my nephew.
He is 18, just graduated High School and he is shipping out for BCT in a few days. He has participated in JROTC since he was old enough. He has several achievment comendations from the program.
He could have went to college but he wanted to serve ASAP. It is something that he has wanted to do since he was old enough to know what it was. My family is not military oriented, we have one or two per generation that serves. So it was not like he pressured into it. That is why I am so proud of him, he Knew what he wanted and no one was going to stop him. The family is behind his decision and supports him very much.
Well I just wanted to rattle off, so thanks for letting me do so.

I know exactly how you feel, Bravo Zulu to your nephew, I am proud of him. I myself spent 3 years in Marine JROTC during the Vietnam years but the war ended so I went into the Navy. My wifes oldest son went through the same Marine JROTC program. Then left college and enlisted in the Navy after Sept 11 2001 to serve his country.
Tell your Nephew "it is a Good and Honorable thing to Serve your Country".

Best wishes to your nephew, and thanks to him for stepping up to serve.

Congratulations to him! Army?
Who says he has to wait for college? Well, concentrate on training first....but I've seen some people milk the bejesus out of 100% tuition.
With a JROTC backround, he'll probably have a much easier adjustment than most.

And, come to think about it he should also gain some rate for his years in JROTC.

We got to spend a few hours today playing with the AR. It will be something I will always remember. We cracked off only a few dozen rounds then we just hung out and talked about life and movies. He is no more nervous than anyone who sighned the contract and is getting ready to ship out. He does not know what to expect but he is ready for the unexpected. He is taking BCT at Ft Sill and then AIT at Ft Bliss. He is looking forward to seeing more of the world.
The speech his father gave last night will be remembered by all. His father, my brother, is a hard man 6'7 and 270. He could not make it through his 2 minute speech. He was full of Pride and fear of the unknown for his son.
We all are very proud that he has chosen to serve.

Nothing wrong with being proud of your nephew- he is truly 'earning' his citizenship.
Good on him- just tell him to stay away from Juarez and the donkey shows

Over 50% of the "Why I joined the Army" letters I read while serving in BCT were simply "I just want to serve my country". I read close to 1200 letters during that year and informally kept the stats.
The fact that they sign the dotted line voluntarily during a time of war speaks volumes to their character. They get it.
