What is the ideal length for a fighting knife? What are the "pros and cons" of a single edge knife compared to a double edge knife?

When it comes to fighting knives, the longer is better. That has to be balanced with carrying, so 7-inches is practical limit. With a good single edge there really is not a need for the second edge to be sharpened. With a double edge it is difficult to choke up on the blade for precision work.
