View Full Version : Sweet! I got a kidney.

A little over a year ago, I announced I had kidney failure. It's been a really fucked year. Tons of blood drawn, needle biopsy’s, tons of paperwork, feeling like complete crap. After 7 donors, I found my match! I have a surgery date for the 26th of August. I'm getting my transplant done at the world famous Cedars-Sinai in Beverly Hills/Los Angeles. Now the real work starts for me. The reason for this post is to see if anybody has had any organ transplant of any kind.

Holyshit. Thank god for good insurance and Medicare A and B.

Great news. Glad to hear it. I always wondered where kidney matches come from because my Godfather had one because of Diabetes.

HK:

Five years ago, my father got a heart transplant. From what his doctors told him, it came just in time.

So, first, congratulations on you getting a donor.

My experience was, and it seems like a cliche, but everyone reacts differently. There was one guy in the transplant ward with my father who was literally in great shape about a week after. My father had a rougher time of it, but had some other conditions that may have made it difficult.

Oddly enough, that rough time was good for our relationship, because I would travel into the City to see him at least twice a week. He had lost a ton of weight - on the order of about 120 lbs - and I would buy him ice cream on the 70 block walk up to see him to try to get him to put back that weight.

It was a struggle, but changed all of our families life in a very positive way. Obviously, because he is still with us, and it helped us grow closer together.

Don't mean to be sentimental, but I'm sure you will do great. Stay strong, get healthy and good luck.

Congrats.

This is also a opportune time to sign up as a organ donor if you have not done so yet.

Not like you can take them with you.

Congrats!

I know my experience is nothing comparably but, I have donor tissue in my knee. About 3yrs ago now I had a cadaver Achilles tendon graphed as a replacement for my ruined ACL.

It’s working great!

My Aunt had her liver replaced last year, with some minor lifestyle changes she’s been doing great.

Best of luck.

HK: CONGRATS!

I had a friend that got a "kidney" transplant a lil while ago and he's doing well!

Stay safe.

Only writing to say I heard of a new procedure called "single port" for kidney transplants. Healing times are said to be substantially quicker. Ask your Doc about it. Congratulations.

My fiance's cousin just got on earlier this year...before that, it was a tough time on the family. Great to hear that you're coming out of the tunnel. I'll keep you in my prayers!

Great news. Good Docs at Cedars. Treat this as a new lease on life. My heart transplant pts have used it as an excuse to start fucking up there new organ by going back to their old habits.

Hijack. SIGN UP FOR ORGAN DONATION !!!!

There's a a kid out there that has never seen a sunset or checked out a hot chicks ass. Your screwed up 20/1000 vision would be a blessing. If you have a baby on the way, find out how to have the cord blood stored, the genetic codes can be a lifesaver. Tissue/tendon donation can heal burn victims. "Broken" hearts may not heal, but they can be transplanted. Kidneys are the most viable, a whole new filter system for the body. Livers are now being split and donated to 2 recipients, although most of our livers would be rejected out of hand just because we're prior service:D.

+1. I work for an organ procurement organization. I procure the tissue (bones, tendons, skin, veins, hearts, corneas). Even if you can't donate living organs, you can still donate tissue up to 85 years old. A full tissue donor helps about 75 different people improve their quality of life.

Congrats to the OP, I hope everything works out great!

Which brings to mind the bio-engineered skin tissue frequently used for grafts (e.g.: burn patients): the most prolific source is from neonatal circumcisions.

+10000 for organ donation!
My wife had a kidney transplant 6 years ago. Her sister was the living donor, they are both doing extremely well. As a matter of fact we just got back from the transplant olympics in Pittsburgh on Tuesday where she won silver and bronze medals in swimming. The National Kidney Foundation holds the games every two years, this is our third time and it has always been awesome. Team NC won the team level competition two years ago in fact. The next ones are in Madison, Wisconsin in 2010. California has two teams of athletes, one for SOCAL and one for NORCAL. Worth checking out once you are back on your feet. Best wishes to you!

Never recv'd any, but I've donated stem cells ( bone marrow) 2X, and just contacted for a third! I guess 3 is the limit, but hell, if I could donate 10 I would. I've been involved in probably hundreds of life saving events over the last 20 years as a firefighter, but those 2 times, I know was actually solely resonsible for saving someones life (OK, maybe the docs helped!), and man dos it make you feel goooood! Plus, be agnostic at best, maybe I can cash in, just in case.....

Congrats on the donor find.

I have a S-i-L who is a RN in transplants at Baylor Medical Center. Don't hate the nurses in the rehab ward, their job is to get you back on your feet as fast as possible. Supposedly it takes 2 days to recover from every day you spend in bed. Atrophy starts after day 1.

They are not being mean just for the sake of being mean.

LOL... well, technically yes, the fibroblasts come from that source, but I had this image of guys meshing and then slapping tiny little slivers of foreskin on burns...

Congrats to the OP on getting a donor. Still a long road ahead though, so stay strong.

Single port is done only at Cleveland Clinic for donor nephrectomies, NOT for recipients. So he shouldn't ask his doctor about that procedure, which is still investigational, and not for him.

Sort of like the old joke about the wallet transforming into a suitcase, eh?

Considering that the same word in Biblical Hebrew ('orel, sometimes rendered 'orla) also has idiomatic meaning as "contraband" in addition to having been used as an ethno-religious epithet for "heathen/pagan", I'd be in a bit of a bind if I ever became a major burn patient: I'd have to skin myself alive upon release! :D

HK, one of my relatives had a heart transplant about 10 years ago. He has to take medication so his body won't reject it but he's doing just fine.

Glad you found a donor. Life is going to be so much better for you. Best wishes.
