I just wanted to promote a great piece of gear...ThermaCell Mosquito Control.

Here in Louisiana we have the world's largest mosquitoes! On average we were using 2 cans of Off with 40% DEET per man each day. Often more. The headaches, the blurred vision, the burning skin from spray-on mosquito and bug control had to go.

Now we use the ThermaCell. It is sold at AAFES and Bass Pro Shop and other locations. About $35 initial purchase and about $10/wk for refills. Worth EVERY PENNY if you are working out in the field and dealing with mosquitoes!

You turn it on and never spray a drop of Off again....no more headaches!!!!

Does it work against ticks?

Unfortunately no....but it does seem to keep away the gnats and generally other flying critters like biting flies, even though it is only sold as mosq. repellent. My experience with 40% DEET is that it does nothing for gnats or flys.

Ok.....flies or flys?

Flies lol. Thanks for the info, I will definitely check it out. Sounds like something I could use, especially during hunting season. Is it unscented?

I used one for the first time during sprng bear season this year and couldn't have been more pleased. I was actually hunting without a bug net!

The lady who runs the AAFES Shoppette on base here said the hunters and the Fish and Wildlife guys are the ones who got her to order them. I've been told the deer and boar here do not seem to notice them....not sure about the gators!

I will say also the camo version is a few bucks more (and does nothing differently than the OD version) and the holster is $10...a little high if you ask me. The system itself I would pay double for it!

Thanks for all of your help guys, this thing sounds awesome.

I am ordering the camo version now...priority shipping...:D

I'm going to test it out this weekend up at my Uncle's property in Virgilina. He owns 350 acres of woodland. I am heading up there for a camping trip with some friends and will let you know how it worked out.

JDAM you can also buy units made for use on the deck, on the ATV, deer stands, etc. It is made for sitting on a flat surface as opposed to carrying it on your person. I think it gives the same 15' radius as the portable unit. I've heard good things about them by guys I work with who use them on their ATV out in the woods doing surveying.

Mine has been great for sitting outside my RV at night by the fire and watching movies!

Also, if you have access to a PX/BX, AAFES sells the camo version for $21.99 and the large refill kit for $18.99 (3 butane/12 mats). I think BPS is about $29 for the camo version.

Nice, I definitely want to hook it up on the tree stand. Having it on a four wheeler would be nice too, when dog hunting.

My experience has been that it works well while static. On an ATV...not so much.

That's understandable, being that the ATV is constantly moving, etc... However, when I dog hunt up in Virginia we ride out and pick a spot to sit while the dogs run through the block and flush out the deer. I usually sit in one spot for at least an hour before moving on to another block, unless the dogs are running fast.

I would think that while stationary it would provide some good protection, right?

Absolutely!

This stuff works ALMOST as advertised. They claim there is no odor, but you (a human) can clearly smell it, however faint, when it is fired up. Nobody will convince me that a deer wont be able to smell it. Now bears didn't seem to care, but I still beleive they smell it as well.

So it does have a scent huh? Do you have to use the product they give you or can you substitute other repellents? If so, this would be the way I would do it, since I have a preferred brand that I use specifically for hunting, because it is unscented and very effective. My main interest is in the device itself, not necessary the brand of repellent. Any way to substitute the mat inside the device with something else?

Never tried another repellent. First off, it would need to be the same size and the thermocell pad in order to fit inot the slot/holder. If you happen to find an alternative which works, please share the details. :D

BTW, the holster is worth the money. It creates options on placement (especially in a tree stand) and provides good storage for refills (both butane and pads).
