any comments on the utility of these two for CQC?

Wouldnt know about the smatchet, but for the kukri the same applies as to the tomahawk : you need to swing it, meaning you need some distance between you & the enemy. The kukri (especially the Cold Steel variants) are excellent tools, but i wouldnt want to slice & dice someone with them http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/smile.gif

The genuine, authentic "real-deal" khukuri (i.e.: Made in Nepal, not India!) is a fearsome blade indeed once it's properly honed.
However, I can confirm veil's comment with regard to the Made-in-India knock-offs mass-produced as trinkets and wrongly sold as the genuine article. These, unlike the true khukuri blade, are poorly balanced and incapable of taking a proper edge. For slashing/thrusting, the trinkets are absolutely useless, but as a tool they make a good replacement for the hatchet and the machete; they're great for chopping wood! http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/biggrin.gif

if anyone wants a real nepalese khukri these people will sell one to you although I havn't figured out where the prices are yet. they are hand made so they're probably not cheap, but I'm sure they are worth every penny. any way here is the site: http://members.aol.com/himimp/index.htm
hope this helps someone. By the way, read the stuff about the Gorkhas, they use the khukris very effectively in combat. it was also an every day tool from what I understand, and they recieved no formal training with it.
One last thing, they have: "a lifetime guarantee on every khukuri we sell. Should the blade or handle fail in any way for as long as the customer owns the knife we will replace the knife free of charge." how many other knife makers say that?

I play with some bando practicioners from time to time, and that khukri moves sweetly
as a weapon. With a tomahawk, khukri or smatchet, wouldn't the point be effectiveness as a utility tool/weapon -vs- weight? Makes no sense to me to be jocked up like Batman with 1,000 different tools for every occasion.
just my .02
Unless you're a knife-freak and like to be all geared-up like batman http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/smile.gif
But seriously, ofcourse. Personally i feel most kukri's are too large to be carried comfortably. I'll stick to one of my ka-bar's.
