First off I'm not asking this to get flamed I'm just curious.

Hypothetically, if the U.S. was to go to war with a country that didn't adhere or recognize the Geneva Convention, would U.S. interogator's still have to abide by it?

Jus' wondering because I've heard of method's used by both side's in Veitnam. (I'd hate to have been captured by either side http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/frown.gif ) and was curios if policy has changed. (If it even was policy. http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/confused.gif )

Thank's, Rick

The short answer is "yes". The Geneva Convention is only one of a miriad of agreements and pacts the US has signed and must abide by. Not only the agreements but US military law as well. Interrogators can not use any inhumane methods while conducting interrogations.

Not to mention that physical torture is unreliable. You want the info you get to be good.

If you put them under enough pain to talk, they will say anything to keep you from hurting them. They'll make stuff up, embellish, whatever...

So, "torture" is not a good interrogation tool and is not taught by the military.

Don't believe everything you read about "torture" and interrogations, either.

One of my mentors and old SF O&I MSG believed that taking several prisoners up in a helo for interrogation was very effective. The second one would give you what you wanted after the first one was helped out the door at 500 ft.

Remind's me of the interrigation scene in, The Seige. I know physical torture may not be completely reliable but it is fairly quick if not messy.

E19,

While deployed to Haiti and opcon to an ODA out of 5th Group we had a situation where some of the boys wanted to hang a couple of prisoners off the roof of the building. We convinced them to allow us to handle the interrogations and got the info we needed which allowed us to hit a cache of weapons (which is another story in and of itself).

I'd have to say the best techniques involves a bar girl, and an AMMO bowl, or about 8 to 10 bottles of the local attempt at beer. This technique has been practiced in every third world shithole know to man. I've even been subject to a couple myself.
