Most special operations schools require that trainees be completely comfortable underwater before they teach the rigs. How can I increase my breath holding ability?

The best way I improved my breath hold was to do cross overs in the pool. That is when you swim from one end of the pool to the other. I would 1st see if you can do the pool from side to side. Then go the length of the pool, then see how many times you can go back and forth .
Hope this helps.

Although this may be obvious, stop using any kind of tobacco products. You'd be suprised how many people fail breath holding evolutions, and are dippers are unaware of the negative effects nicotine(not just smoke) has on O2 utilization.

gentlemen,
Yes it is good to have a solid breath-hold and be as comfortable in the water as possible. BUT, let me give you a bit of advice. Doing cross-overs (or over & unders)
are outstanding for this purpose. I have also known a few people who passed out in the water pushing a bit too hard. I also know of a Navy Chief that passed away doing this early in the morning by himself. It's called shallow water black-out and it deserves your respect. Continue to push the envelope but have a buddy and look after each other. Teamwork is just as important as how long you can hold your breath.

Good advice, I was at school in Eglin when the Chief passed away. He was an outstanding instructor.
If you're going to practice thes tecniques make sure you have a swim buddy with you.

1st RULE OF DIVING - Never leave your swim buddy.
Thanks for reminding me. I forget some of the people have never been in a pool before.
