What fins do all you BTDT guys recommend, Rocket fins or Bio Fins? I´ve heard that SEALs and Recon Marines plan on switching fins from Rocket fins (US Divers) to BioFins (Apollo).
Is this true?

I hope you'll welcome a reply from a hardhat diver who also spends countless hours in the waternot only mud stomping on the bottom, but swimming from platform to platform. This really depends on the type of diving your gonna do. The Rocket fins are very stiff and not a great idea for just reef cruising, the apollo are going to be more flexible, but on the other hand, I have experience with Rocket fins, a few pairs of Beuchat, and Zeagle. The Rocket fins are tried and true, and if your looking for a rugged pair of fins that will still be in your dive bag ten years from now, the that is the way to go....

Dont know what the SEAlS are going to however, I can tell you that in school you will use the rocket fins. Personally I dont like them because of the stiffness of the fin. Now the Biofins I heard from a former team mate are the ones that everyone likes. I have never tried them but thats what I hear.

If you are heading to any of the schools I would suggest you try out a set of rockets. The new ones that they are issuing are about big enough for my 7 year old. On the plus side if you have little girls feet they will last forever. Look at Parkways if you can find them. Same design but with a bigger foot pocket. I think Jet comes in an XL that will fit a decent size foot.

If youre looking for a Rocket fin style with better hydrodynamics, try the Scubapro Jet's. They are the original designers and did a much better job. US Divers had to change their fin to get away from patent infringement. The Bio's are a little weird. I have to bicycle when I have them on, not good. Some guys say they're better for economy of effort, I dont know. My old bod only knows to use the hip flexors. If you have a big foot, try a fin called the Turtle. I cant remember who makes them, I think its USD. Huge foot pocket. I use 'em when I've got a dry suit on.

Surface swimming or underwater?
We had some duckfoot fins that we used for surface swims. Slow swimmers left fast swimmers with rockets behind. Underwater, they sucked.
Operational concerns. What is the issue fin now? Probably best to learn to use it, because if you receive a field supply, thats what you're going to get, especially heel straps, which are constantly breaking.

The new split fins are the new fin these days and take some getting used too. I had a set of force fins issued and they too take alot of getting used to (the kick is strange. No resistance on the up stroke). It depends on what you are doing. Chasing bugs or ship attacks. http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/cool.gif
