Should the US put more effort into monitoring which foreign terrorist organizations recruit, receive training, or raise funds in the US?

It is not just international terrorist groups, we have domestic groups that recruit straight out of our SF (Steven Barry).

The Resister / founder-editor Steven Barry was deadlined several years ago. Interested parties can read the post USASFC 15-6 / Congressional hearing story by doing Google search for Southern Poverty Law Center + Steven Barry. The story as published by the SPLC's in-house magazine details the sorry little history of the Resister, Special Forces Underground, and the "operators" who spawned both.

This recent pub from RAND doesn't answer your question directly, but it certainly is aimed at it, in the context of monitoring what's going on in locally:

State and Local Intelligence in the War on Terrorism (http://www.rand.org/pubs/monographs/2005/RAND_MG394.pdf)
Most discussion of information sharing in the war on terrorism has concentrated on the federal government. Yet, state and local law enforcement agencies (LEAs) may be uniquely positioned to augment federal intelligence capabilities by virtue of their presence in nearly every American community, their knowledge of local individuals and groups, and their use of intelligence to combat crime. How widespread is counterterrorism intelligence activity among state and local LEAs, and how is this activity managed? What are those state and local authorities doing differently since 9/11 in collecting and processing information? How are courts and other oversight bodies guiding that process? And what might an “ideal” division of labor among the various levels of government look like?

I wonder if the FBI put out some fake terrorist employment advertisements in the major papers how many applications they would get. As ridiculous as it sounds I have no fear some idiot would do it.

Hey, just throwing my two cents in. There is a great book called "American Jihad" that sheds a lot of light on the domestic terrorist threats.

Anyone who goes against the U.S. and is a citizen should either be killed or imprisioned for life. I.E.: Klan , Black Panthers, Neo Nazis, Islamo Facists, all are terrorists to include their protector the ACLU, and all are scums.... Just my opinion.......BUT I'M RIGHT!

If they can't consider those named groups as terorists, they certainly qualify as hate groups (including NAACP and the ACLU.)

We've got such a problem still with the larger picture that the separatist groups are running amok more than usual.
