What are your opinions on shotguns as weapons for CQB? For example, what are the advantages and limitations for an operator armed with a self-loading shotgun? How do shotguns compare with assault rifles and submachine guns for CQB? Any thoughts, especially from those of you who do this stuff for real, would be appreciated.

The shotgun, semi-auto or pump, still has a place in CQB and hopefully will for quite sometime.

I love my shotgun for entry work. However that doesn't mean I won't use something else from time to time. There are limitations to the weapon, such as magazine capacity & precision shot placement but these can be worked around.
Comparing them to sub-guns or select fire carbines is kind of like apples & oranges.

Also, the shotgun allows an operator to deploy breaching rounds, distraction devices, low-lethal (though these should be fired from a designated weapon not used for "live" ammo).

There has been a minor revolution in thinking about the shotgun over the past few years. Out of that have some pretty decent pieces of equipment that enhance the performance of the shotgun in the close quarters environment.
