Found this on another forum I browse, thought it was a pretty cool read considering I had never heard of it before.. What gets me is that a lieutenant colonel was in a posistion to launch a nuclear holocaust.. Also shows that they really didn't want to go into a nuclear war as much as the US didn't.

The Lord works in mysterious ways. Thankfully, that dude was in the saddle that day.

At least he could have gotten the Nobel prize for actually doing something to prevent Nuclear War!

"Since the book’s publication, Petrov has been honored by the United Nations and presented with a World Citizen Award, and there has been talk of giving him the Nobel Prize. Still, the humble Russian scientist plays down his role in averting a nuclear crisis: “I was simply the right person in the right time, that was all,” he said in the upcoming documentary."

Unlike the US, the Soviets gave nuclear weapon authority to the brigade level.

Luckily he wasn't as crazy as some of those above his position. There were high level soviets who saw losing a majority of the population acceptable if that meant winning the war and coming out on top.

Here's a more detailed account: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-505009/September-26th-1983-The-day-world-died.html

The NATO exercise that alerted the Soviets is called Able Archer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Able_Archer_83

Also, Russia issued a press release in 2006, saying that Petrov would not have been able to release the missiles, even if he had believed there was an attack: http://www.un.int/russia/other/060119eprel.pdf

This is actually the subject of a film called 1983: The Brink of Apocalypse.
