View Full Version : A Question?
What is the average age of JTF members? how long can you serve.
I've read (can't remember where) that you serve for 4 year cycles.
...anybody know of anyone going straight from the reserves to JTF-2? I have read (once again, I can't remember where...) that JTF-2 membership is open to reservists, but I am a little skeptical that it actually happens in "real life."
Cheers!

All the info here has been taken from their recruiting brochure, the info is about the same as in the CANFORGEN that came out 15 march 00. Service: A successful applicant can expect to serve w/ JTF2 3 to 5 years depending on background and experience. The average join at 28 years of age and has nine years of service in the Regular force (this is the majority here don't forget). Reservist can serve with them and have and probably are serving with them, if you have what it takes, are willing to make the sacrifices and have the guts to apply, why not. That should answer your questions.

I know of three guys from our Reserve Infantry unit that have tried JTF selection. One made it in.

Did they try for Cat. A, "Assaulter"?
...Do you suppose that if you make it through selection under Cat. B or Cat. C you might eventually 'upgrade' yourself to Cat. A from within the unit? ...although, I guess you may not make yourself too popular with your team mates (initially) if you try for the backdoor route! =)
Just thinking out loud...

The one that made it is cat A. The others, I don't know. Ther're on tour right now so I can't ask. But knowing them, I'd say both tried for cat A.

yup...let's say if someone were to try out for cat A...but for somereason decided to go cat B and drive the suburban..theoretically he could upgrade to cat A after meeting certain requirements

How about officers?
Does anyone have any idea on their length of service, average age, length of previous service?
What exactly do the cat.B guys do other then drive those suburbans? What else could they operate?
Would the JTF2 provide security for the PM on a regular basis or just of high risk or special occasions?

RCMP still has the resposibility for the PM's - and all other VIP's in Canada - basic security. I'd imagine JTF is to busy training to pull regular shifts, and there's not really a high terrorism threat here anyway. And the Ottawa Police Tactical Team still has the primary responsiblity for the federal buildings in Ottawa, at least until JTF-2 gets on the scene.
In terms of what the Cat B guys do, I'd imagine they drive anything and everything under the sun, short of Leopards.

Did RCMP had a SWAT team for years before JTF-2 was set up? IIRC, the name was the ERT with several units in each province.

Yes, it was named SERT - Special Emergency Response Team. They were based in Dwyer Hill as well I think, since there are several RCMP plaques in the Connaught Ranges (Ottawa) Mess Hall with Dwyer Hill written on it.

Yah the old RCMP SERT was based out of Dwyer Hill. They sold the land to DND and helped to start up the JTF2

Another question.
The tact helicopter pilots and crew that fly for the JTF2, I would assume that they are chosen based on their piloting skills. But do they form a seperate squadron based out of Dwyer Hill, or are they part of a larger unit based out of Petawawa.

I believe they are based out of Pet. I've seen them do practice insertion runs on a multi-story kill house there. It's quite interesting to watch... these guys go VERY low.

i hear that JTF 2 is beiging to expand there roles, would they be doing advanced recces, or learn guerilla warfare, or are they simply staying with the CT. Also does anybody know what there selection school is like.

I think JTF-2 expanded it's roles almost iummediatley after it's creation. From what I've heard it's now a full special forces unit, not just CT.
