For anyone who caught my posts over at the LFRR on the Texas NG doing the Bosnia tour, here's an exerpt from an email from one of the guys. 3 more NG units will be taking COMMAND of the peacekeeping forces next 2 years (including mult-national force). Something our command should be looking at.
"Im back home now in Texas now. We came home on 10 October. I got the
school and the wings on my DD214, Discharge from active duty papers, so its
official. Ill be wearing them too.
We had two overt attacks against our forces during my tour, a Special
forces camp got hit with 6 RPG's, in one room of one house. The guys who
lived in the room were on leave, thank goodness or they would be dead. We
also had a grenade thrown at a dismounted patrol, with one guy wounded in
the hand.
To get out of the office one day, I flew door gunner on a lift mission
from Baja Luka to Glamoc range. In Baja Luka we had a mission breif with a
Canadian Artillery Battery, did a sling load with 8 UH60s and 8 105MMs and
flew them over the mountains. The Canadians were super impressive, mission
oriented, and to the point. The guns were up and firing, steel on target, 4
minutes after derig. They were great to work with."

Huh. And if he only knew how fucked up we infantry types think that the arty is. Good show, though...goes to show that maybe things arn't always fucked up. On my tour, we had a cougar gunner smokin' the sniper targets with his 76. I guess more weird things have happened.

Funny.. we spend most of our time bashing the US NG. Well, if we're so much better, why can't we do it?
Wow, didn't know Bosnia was that exciting now...

I hear alot of stories of how professional our forces are from troops of other nations, but I wonder how this can continue into the future with the training standards we currently have. How competent will our troops be in 10 years, having gone through a 16 day QL2 with virtually no PT or real stress placed on them. Or how about future NCO's who go through a much easier leadership course than in the past. I think alot of our current professionalism is due to a large number of the old guard still around who went through basic training with a much higher standard. When they are gone what will the opinion of Canadian troops be among foreign troops? I think in 10 or 15 years it will be quite different, and not for the better.

We really desperately need a WAR to sort us out. Years and years of peace and peacekeeping have #$&@*'d us. It seems all the terrorists hiding out here haven't changed any practices either.
SOMEONE PLEASE MESS WITH CANADA!!

Canada is not the only country that has issues about this with their military... I think its a "World" problem... We have similar problems down hear in the states. I think it just take's the "HooAh" Soldiers to keep the standard alive by handing it down to the younger Soldiers despite what the civilian society (Politicions) may say... Keep the faith... There will always be Warrior"s!

No way, they've got nice beaches and cheap hotels. I say we take over some of the Channel Islands. They're just banks and tax havens for the rich , relativly unpopulated (which means we stand a good chance of winning) and with the money we loot from the banks, we can buy some equipment.
Naw, now that I think about it, it won't work. Because after a bit, the people would vote in a our new socialist govt, have our budget cut, reduce our numbers, take away our weapons and make us pay land claims.

Yup. Pretty sad. I was telling some Yugo stories the other day, when a girl asked me "did you kill someone?"
Nope. Had to hurt someones feelings though.

Yeah I've met a few peacekeepers who had to hurt some feelings. They still feel bad about it till this day.
