The topic of my International Relations class today was landmines. I have a fellow reservist who is a sapper in my class who just returned from a Roto in Bosnia...so he knew what was being discussed in class. The professor had a bunch of training mines (supplied from the local engineers) and was explaining the hard facts about them.
The class actually was laughing through a few points of the discussion and the engineer got pissed off and put up his hand. He then proceeded to ask why the class was laughing at something so serious and that he deals with these things and there is nothing funny about them....
After that their was not another peep from the class.
After the lecture many students proceeded to come up to him and ask him about what he does. Instead of scorn or ridicule we actually got a kinda curious respect. It felt nice.
Maybe people will take a different view of the Reserves and the Forces in general when they recieve some exposure to what we actually do.
