This guy got off the Disney Train at Magic Kingdom right in front of us. Note the ACUs, civilian work boots and no shave.

I don't know. I sent the wife in with a camera so I wouldn't be accused of conducting unauthorized surveillance on an American citizen. Plus--chicks can always get closer to dudes without drawing suspicion! My wife was resistant because she knew this was going to end up on SOCNET.

On the subject of wearing military garb outside of work I have to admit from time to time depending on the weather I may wear one of my outer shells to block out the wind/rain...

But going to Disney World in full uniform or even partial uniform is pretty fucked up unless you have a specific duty to do so... and I would maybe understand full dress for Memorial or Veterans Day.

EDIT: And without even reading everything including the first post I just noticed the whole no shave and civvie boots. That would be tempting to call the guy out as a poser in public or at least challenge him for wearing that. Also at least there are no unit patches on it either... That are visible in the pictures that is but its hard to tell if there is one or not on the left in the second picture down.

You have a full size version of pics 2 & 4? I want to see what patch that is and the rank if you can see it. Can't tell with the small versions.

And I don't care what kind of excuse that guy has, he is ate the fuck up.

2 days ago I saw a guy dressed exactly like him this walking around in Germany.
Old woodland BDU and Caterpillar boots.

He was walking hand in hand with a pretty normal looking girl. I guess he wasn't a guy wearing clothes like this for the "style". So...either a "completelyfuckedup" or a poser.

Would hav loved to ask him, but I was with my girlfriend and you never know how they react.

We had an Asian male (IIRC he was from China) about 21 yrs. come into the gun store I work at when not OCONUS wearing a complete ACU setup, some patches, issue type boots, etc. We were looking at this guy funny (non soldier looking individual, for what that's worth these days) and asked him if he was in the Army, turned out he was just a big fan of the US military.... Lotta vets working there, we told him it was uncool to wander about in public like this, suggested he visit a recruiter.....upon which we found out he didn't even have a green card.....we got the impression he would'nt enlist even if he did, like I said, a fan......

I love this site. Posers have no idea how readily they can be suspected and confirmed. There was a thread a while back where a Socnetter at an airport spotted someone with a ranger tab on their ACUs from 10th mountain, and within a day he was indentified and his CSM received a phone call.

Facebook was a No-Go, and Myspace had a limited profile and the guy was wearing large enough sunglasses that I couldn't tell if it was the same as the person in question.

Rather than emailing the dude, would it be better to find his unit and email the COC? That way, if he is the dude, he won't come back and say "nope, not me." And if it is not, then I think the command would be pretty quick to point that out as well....

I see this kind of stuff all of the time.

The most notable instances are when Marines wear their dress uniforms (all the way down to gloves) to the bar district to get plastered.

Asked one about it once, and he said that he never had to pay for a drink when in uniform, and that "chicks fuckin' love Marines."

All I could think was "wow."

SOTB

I see this kind of stuff all of the time....I disagree.

Marines -- or any Serviceman -- wearing their dress uniform isn't in the SLIGHTEST bit incorrect. Our dress uniforms are ours to wear, as long as we wear them correctly. While I personally find them too restrictive to wear in most civvie situations, the pride associated with those uniforms is just one of the benefits of having stepped up to swear the oath.

If you have seen Marines, or any Serviceman, wearing their dress uniforms incorrectly -- then that would be the same situation.

The Marine dress uniform is not like a police uniform or the cammies that I see other services wearing in the airports (this is not a slam on other services, I personally think Marines ought to be allowed to wear their cammies in more situations than what I was allowed in my time). I don't agree that ANY Serviceman should be permitted to wear cammies to bars, to amusement parks, etc. That is just GAY.

But no -- I don't think the situation you described is the same at all. And Servicemen have been wearing their dress uniforms "out on the town" for eons -- and I think it is right to do so. I also think it is cool that people buy them drinks. Hell, I think it is even cool that Servicemen wear these uniforms to get free booze. It is really not any different than wearing them to get laid -- and I sure as fuck don't disagree with that....

Dress uniform - yes. Cammies - no. One is for combat and the other is, well, for getting laid and free drinks!

I can usually be found at the airport Chili's enjoying fajitas and a beer and have several times picked up our serviceman's check anonymously.

I did want to tell the full bird Col that sat down next to me on my last trip home to shut the fuck up. He got on his cell and was telling his buddies -- he called more than one -- about all the rocket attacks he was in loud enough for the whole bar area to hear.

Working on it. The only website with CoC info for this unit is Ft. Drum's and it is outdated. At least most of currently listed Command/Staff has moved on or ETS'd. None would know a brand new Private.

I understand what you guys are saying, and I admittedly didn't articulate my position very well.

As an outsider, I just think that when you wear that uniform, you are representing the organization as well as yourself. I can totally see wearing it to any formal engagement, event, or even to a drunken bash on post (out of the public eye). It is something that you have earned and should be proud of (I know I would be).....I get that.

The problem is that a lot of these guys go out to this bar district and make absolute butts out of themselves while wearing the uniform. To me, that is disprespectful to the uniform and organization that it represents. When you are wearing that uniform, all eyes are on you, and I don't think that it serves the individual Marine or the Marines in general well for someone in dress blues to be screaming at a bartender for cutting them off, trying to start a fight with everyone they see, or to be wandering down a ghetto street at 3am puking their head off and trying to stop trafic for a ride.....

This is just my opinion, but I simply think that if you know that you are going to go out in the general public and get stupid, shit faced hammered, then you leave the uniform at home. To do otherwise just seems -wrong- to me.

But that's just my opinion.

Regardless, know that we do everything we can to get these wayward lads back on their way safely and without any formal LE intervention....oh, the stories I could tell. LOL

Anyway, this thread is kind of out of my lane, so I am out. I hope this post made more sense.

Take care,
mdb

The downside to wearing a dress uniform is that you are required to wear it with dignity. Puking, stumbling, acting like an ass -- is not the bearing one associates with the correct bearing expected.

HERE (http://www.marines.mil/news/publications/Pages/MCO%20P1020.34G%20W%20CH%201-4.aspx) are the regs for wearing a uniform -- and even for wearing civvie clothing. I can't write to the other services' regs, but one way to find yourself jacked up in the Corps is to wear your dress uniform and look like a complete ass -- at least it was when I was in, and where I was stationed....

Richman

[entire post]

You and I were in the Corps at the same time and I agree with your post.

There is one thing about wearing the uniform with pride and using it to your advantage when it came to the females and drinks, another was to totally act like an ass in it. There was nothing worse than getting the appropriate punishment dulled out by the 1stSgt, and then having the 1stSgt chew all of our sorry asses (even if we were in the freaking barracks that night) for not having that guy's back, and taking care of the situation before it got out of hand.

EDIT TO ADD: Thanks for the link to the regs.

Puking, stumbling, acting like an ass...

I think it depends on the uniform. Traditionally, ALL of these things are more readily associated with someone in Navy crackerjacks. Hollywood knows this, and will always add a few sailors to “seedy up” a movie bar scene...
