Hello
I have been going through past topics and posts and have finally decided to put my dilema up for discussion.
The thing is I have an oppurtunity to enlist in either the canadian or australian army. I won't get into the technicalities but I just do.
Having sensed a rather grim tone on this forum I am leaning towards the aus. corps.
if anyone has any suggestions or comments that may help me decide, I would appreciate it.

Run, don't walk away from the CF. I guarantee disappointment. I don't know anything about the Australian army but it couldn't possibly be worse than the CF. I am in the process of leaving the CF for overseas and frankly don't understand those who have the option of serving in another military staying here.
But don't take my word for it. Join up and you'll soon discover the huge level of cynicism that exists among the troops. Whenever we are promised some form of high speed or challenging training the troops usually burst out in laughter. And the officer or NCO passing on the information usually just smile and shrug, knowing the troops are right to laugh. There is a reason we can't recruit or retain enough troops.

Take your choice... both Armies are very professional and well-trained.

The CF isn't perfect. Neither is any Army I've had the privilege of working alongside or know people in. In Canada, we have a particular character flaw that forces us to whine about anything the works. You see a lot of that here.

You also see a lot of whining about special forces wannabes who complain about the lack of "cool" and "high speed" courses. Fact is, that's not what an army is all about and if that's what prompts people to leave the CF or not to join it -- Great! Rambos make lousy soldiers.

I've known some very professional Australian soldiers. They have a good Army. However, all of them share with me the same frustrations about their military as most of our officers and soldiers feel about ours. Same same.

In the Canadian Forces, more than ever, you have the opportunity to do real work even in the combat arms. Operational deployments are a given for all soldiers. Didn't used to be that way. I was very lucky and in 14 years served, literally, all over the world doing some freaky shit. But even that is still a fraction of a career.

Don't join the Army anywhere because you want to be a Commando Hero. Join to serve.

Aussies are definitely more physically fit than Canadian's (as a generalization) and it shows in their military. If you're big into PT you'll do well down under, here its more of a hindrance as people see you as trying to be 'elitist' or something.
If you are interested in Special Operations type jobs (nothing wrong with that, its why 90% of the new recruits join the US Army and something we need here in Canada, simply as a recruiting tool. Its called aspiring to be THE BEST) then you have way more career options in Australia.
We are both commonwealth countries so watever yuor choice if yuo want to move, you will most likely be given equivelency.

yep you can.

ANY commonwealth citizen can.

When I was at my RCB briefing there was a Canadian in my group. He was there to join the Parachute Regiment as Canada no longer has any airborne forces.

Check out the web site http://www.army.mod.uk you can have an on-line chat with them yourself.

Canadians can join, no problem - and do so often enough that the British military attache staff in Ottawa didn't bat an eye when I asked them. You can be an officer or enlisted, any unit or regiment.

But do what Private Piles recommend.. go talk to them on the webpage. And they'll send ya their info packets too.
