Hi, I live in Canada, and am VERY interested in getting into the JTF2. I have heard you have to have 3 years of normal, full time enlistment before you can apply. How about combat diving? Is combat diving like what SEALs do? Any info is GREATLY appreciated! thanks in advance

Hey, Nick
I dunno what the official requirements are for time in, but JTF2 won't look at you if you have less than 3 years in. It'll take that long to get enough Courses and qualifications to be competitive anyway.
Clearance Divers are different than SEALs. 90% of Clearance Diver's work is related to underwater munitions - defusing mines, finding explosives, searching ship's hulls, maybe even laying their own limpet mines. They do do some beach recce, but no SEAL stuff. But still a very hard, very professional unit.

Hey Enfield,
Are you in the CF? Drop me a line at recce_o@hotmail.com. Always looking to make new canuck contacts.

I'm not sure if Mike's last post was a chastisement or not, so, in an attempt to redeem myself, here is my answer to Nick:
Nick, if you are not yet in the Canadian Forces ("CF"), contact your local recruiting office. Be warned that they get all kinds of people who walk in from the street and want to be a commando, Green Beret, larger than life military super hero all of the time. If you express an interest in special operations from the start you run the risk of being discounted as just another Walter Mitty.
Furthermore, many of the people in the recruiting office are embittered. Do you really think they would be working in the recruiting office if they were outstanding warriors? They are also terribly conventional and most (not all!) perceive special operations to be for prima donnas.
If you are in the CF, you have to apply for JTF through your chain of command. Ask your adjutant for the telephone number for the JTF recruiting team.
Basically, unless you find someone who was in the JTF (which isn't that hard because Canada's army is so small) your best source of info will be what is available on this web site.
Good luck.

I was killing some time and reading a few of the old posts in here and read (or re-read) the comments made by recce_o about how not to walk into a CFRC off the street and say you want to be in the JTF2. What's the big deal if some recruiter thinks your a Walter Mitty? Is he going to bar you from joining? Send up a request to the CO of JTF2 to "watch out for this wannabe?" Chances are you'll never see him or her ever again so who cares?
I know it takes piles of work and experience to get into JTF2 and not that I would do this, but what is the big deal? I have heard it from many people but have yet heard someone justify the remark.

Two quick points:
1. Combat divers are not clearance divers. Combat divers are field engineers with special shallow diving skills (SCUBA and Hookah) that enable them to perform specialized tasks such as: beach/bridge recce, some underwater demolitions, armoured vehicle underwater rescue, safety for amphibious ops, etc.
Clearance divers are navy folks who perform shallow water SCUBA tasks to clear mines and inspect hulls, etc.
2. Most regular force recruiters are tasked there whether they like it or not and the CF often tries to send them their best. (No I was never a recruiter!) So, you might very well find some "high-speed, low-drag" warriors in a recruiting centre. Mind your manners! http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/smile.gif
The reason recruiters may look with a jaundiced eye on someone who walks in fixated on joining the special airborne underwater spacecraft commando pathfinder navy airmobile seal squadron is: "Rambo" was a shitty soldier.
Cheers,

Hey Nick, Privates are being accepted into the JTF, however you have to be a special case. As for combat diver (not clearance), you have to be in the combat engineers. And no they are not like seals. Clearing beaches in landing prep and stuff like that.

Hey retards, stop posting replies to topics dated 1999. If you want to join JTF2 and you aren't even in the army yet, get real.
