The survey quetioned 1738 men. Of course it could be, that the survey was not representative of the entire population, but i rather suspect it was. Nearly half of those who admitted rape, admitted multiple rapes.
In addition, one in ten said they had been raped by other men.

Unfortunately this is quite true. It's a sick legacy that goes hand in hand with our murder rate of 18 000 per annum (37 per 100 000). Looking at police stats for my small, relatively safe town, sexual crimes have increased from 251 to 655 in a year. It's a well known fact that the number of rapes and sexual assaults is grossly under reported.

Well the current President of South Africa was charged with rape. So although he was aquited it still embarrassing for the country that the President gets charged with something like that.

What I find particularly disturbing is the pervasive acceptance of rape as normal guy behavior.
"It said practices such as gang rape were common because they were considered a form of male bonding."
Here in the states, we're taught that rape is about power; a violent act that's got nothing to do with sex and everything to do intimidation and the exercise of strength of one person over another. Seems to me that in South Africa rape is considered an acceptable way to obtain sex and satisfy urges.

Awesome. I guess all that time and effort spent by the world to end Apartheid really paid off, huh?

Someone once asked me if my suggestion to wall off Africa for 50 years, and prevent any interaction with those within would include S. Africa (the comment alluding to the concept that they would just kill each other off, and/or release a serious epidemic of Ebola and finish those not killed by tribal violence). As if because there are some white dudes down there, that it should be exempt.
My answer was that the first brick should be laid in Capetown....

I wonder how these numbers compare to the Deklerk / Botha Era ??
Im sure that the genius Mandella / Mbeki / Montlatha / Zuma have lowered the crime rate since taking office and allowing the common folks to rule
I mean things have improved since the evil white dictators have been ousted hasnt it??

Dont have specific numbers to compare but rape is definitely far more now than then. As to things having improved since the evil white dictators left , well of course they have we now know that african potatoes and garlic cure aids ( information from our last Minister of Health Dr Manto Shabalang) and a new belief is that raping a baby also cures aids .
SOTB excellent idea about walling the whole continent off. A quicker more efficient way would be to turn it into glass IMO. Africa for africans / Europe for Europeans , thats the way things should be now. Oh and all the aid coming in here should also stop, about time people stopped thinking they are entitled to America, Europes money. Just my 2c.

I have read in many sources that large segments of the population of the continent of Africa hold the belief that AIDS can be cured by sexual relations with a virgin. The horrific result of this incredibly stupid and apparently mystical belief is the widespread rape of very young children to include infants in many cases. The operating theory being that the younger they are the more likely they are to be virginal.
I spent a month in Kenya in 1997 on a MEDCAP with 5th SFG and it became clear to me through what I witnessed and in conversation with many Kenyans that were contracted to work with us that African society is hopelessly corrupt, spiritually dark, cruel, and lacking in compassion and a basic recognition of otherwise well appreciated human rights. No doubt there are exceptional people in Africa who are tremendously inspirational and decent, but they are a very distinct minority. They are also a minority that is seen clearly as a serious threat to those who oppose them and the history of Africa is a non-stop effort to cleanse those people from society.
I would like to recommend one of the most amazing books that I have ever read called "Left to Tell" (http://www.amazon.com/Left-Tell-Discovering-Rwandan-Holocaust/dp/1401908969) which is the story of Immaculee Ilibagiza who somehow survived the Rwandan Holocaust. It is a horrifying tale of racism, cruelty, and dangerous group dynamics that is overcome by an incredible account of survival and perseverance.

Being in a fraternity kind of reminded me of being in the Army, so I guess I wouldn't be surprised if 25% or more of Army guys have done the same thing.
Wait.. let me try that again. What you said made no sense, and being in a fraternity does not cause a propensity to commit rape. That's better.

Your right it doesn't, but sadly I already know 3 girls that have been raped by frat guys, 2 on a first date when the guys put a drug in their drink, one when she was at a party. On top of that we have had one fraternity that gave a girl animal tranquilizer then ran a train on her, now she is infertile and fucked up for life (the frat is banned from the university). Back in the day at this college, a highschool girl, being stupid, went to a frat party and got raped. I am not saying that fraternities do all the shit, I just have bad experiences with them and regularly get to hear from my law enforcement friends the stories.
Please everyone forgive my cynical views on frats and frat boys

Not a problem. There is stupid everywhere, espcially in college. I personally would have beat someone within an inch of their life if I saw or knew about something like that going down, even in my own house and i'm sure everyone else there was the same.
Fraternities definitely have their share of idiots, but rape is a whole different ballgame than beer bongs and binge drinking. Sorry to hear about your friends.
Edit to add: I saw/heard of much worse stories of the way women were treated in the Army than in college (the worst part was the girls running the barracks were all for it), so I guess there was bit of truth in my prior statement. I didn't condone it then either.

Rather than attributing military service, or frat/gang (not much difference IMO) membership as being causal, it's more appropriate to state that these tend to be environs which attract latent homosexuals of the "macho" variety. The "male bonding" angle in this instance is merely a manifestation of male participants' subconsciously having sexual contact with each other.
You wouldn't find a sexually normal man participating in such acts.

I do believe it's a cultural thing.
Some cultures accept is as normal. The "culture" may not be the entire community, but merely a small segment of such. There's been enough posts about frats etc, but anyone who has lived / worked in a "multi-cultural" area will notice that certain crimes, inlcuding rape, appear to be more prevalent in specific cultures.
Some of the most horrific rapes, and those with the most offenders (gang-rapes), in my experience, obviously limited to the represented cultures in my region, seemed to stem from those cultures from Africa and the Middle-East.
But to say so in a public forum equates to racism.......how does that work again?

I know some really nice people from Capetown.. (one young lady and her husband became good friends)... But from what I hear South Africa boasts the worlds highest murder rate and by most accounts.. is the most violent place in the world.. that is unless you feel like dressing yourself in an Uncle Sam suit with an American flag and walk through Karachi mid-day..
I hear the SA gun laws are abymissaly horrible for citizens too.. I guess that goes along with the sky high crime and murder rates. My friends say their house is like a fortress.. they do not travel at night unless its an emergency.

Nofear steel on target. However over here in good ol sunny SA it is not a small segment of the community unfortunately. 25% of the entire male population is far too large a segment bearing in mind that these figures stem from reported rapes , there have been reports from the Police that there are very many rapes that go unreported for fear of victimisation and ostracization of the victim . So the figure of 25% is probably far higher.

Yeah, my use of the word "small" was me trying to be polite.
I have seen first hand how women of certain cultures actually think rape is normal and acceptable, due to it being so prevalent.
Come to think of it, I've also seen male victims in some cultures think the same thing.
As far as I'm concerned, rapists are lower then animals, and there should be no crime if they are executed on sight.

Through my experience, I give this a +1.
And just for the record...you rape a woman or girl that I love...you die. No arrest, no police, no court, no judge. It is as simple as that.

Ugh. So how would you propose we solve this problem? Coincidentally, 25% seems to be a popular number - it's also "the rate" at which illegals are raping here in the states. Thoughts....?
