Most everyone probably read in the papers (Nat Post/Sun) that the MB Gelaendewagen is the only competitor in the run-up for the ILTIS replacement. With a price topping $175 000 per copy (802 to be purchased), is this the vehicle for us? Opinions....

Good question. I had hoped that we would get the DDGM veh that's showcased on the LUVW DND intranet page. The GM veh could have been both SMP and Civy COTS, and could be repaired at any GM dealership. It is also a HMMVW derivative.

As for the Benz thingy, I don't know too much, but I think we're taking it up the arse again....

Maybe I can dig up some specs, and see if this is another piece of crap.

Here's a shot from the article. The G-Wagen has been around for at least 20 years, and the Germans, Danes, Norwegians and Hungarians use 'em, and i've only read good things about them. Will keep digging....

Okay so I do have time,
damn, cant put the pic here, dont know how, guess my PC savvy is not up to standard.
These MB's look pretty good. I spoke with an ex Dutch soldier who was in at the time they got brand new Land Rovers, they sucked, rivets would keep comming loose, engines too weak, could not modify etc. They switched to MB and he said they were all happy with it.

Yep, seems I was wrong in trashing it too. There's a guy on my floor who's done oodles of UNHCR type stuff, and has lots of experience with the military and civy G Wagons. He says they're good veh, and very reliable.

Could this be true? Can we say 'yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus'?

OK... my turn to play the cynic:

Sounds like a good original product...

Q: Where will it be built? And, by whom?

...Ouch!

From what I've been able to find, they'll be built in Austria, but who knows what would happen in the end? MB said that this was part of their proposal... I'd hate to think how much it would cost to set up an assembly line here, retooling a plant, training workers...would be years before we saw them in service...

If you check out mercedes-benz.ca there is info on the civie G-wagon which they plan to release in Canada some time soon with a price tag of about $110,000.00 guessing they are probably looking to run the military version out of the same type factory. Does any one know what differences there will be from the Civ version to the Military one?
