View Full Version : Wish I was American
You Americans are so lucky. Ever since I was 9 (now 18) I wanted to join the US Military (Special Forces), but I can’t because I am Canadian. I have tried everything to join the US Military but I haven’t yet succeeded. I would give up anything to be American. Even though my Mom’s Dad is American, that doesn’t help me get an American citizenship. I would even give up my Canadian citizenship to be American. My friends always tell me to join the Canadian Military, But I don’t because my military is crap and so is my government. My Prime Minister even said “he doesn’t like dealing with people from the West Coast because they aren’t nice”. With that said, that’s another reason I don’t want to join the Canadian Military. What kind of Prime Minister says that? Geezzz. Anyways. Long story short. If you’re American, join your Military and make your family and country proud.

Does your mother's father live in the States?
Jeff Rambo,
Yup, My Mother's Father lives in the States. He has lived in Torrance Cali for 48 years and he has been an American Citizen for 40 years. I don't think this would matter, but my mom did live in the states for 3 years, but she never became an American Citazen. She lived in the states when she was a child.

I dated a Canadian, in the Canadian Air Force. Stationed at Greenwood in N.S. Don't know what he did, but he'd get called out in the middle of the night and disappear for a few days or so; then come back and not be able to talk about it. He sometimes came back with a ding or two.
Either he was doing something really exciting (and dangerous) for his country, or he was cheating on me. Whichever - he's put in 20 years, retired, and he's now thinking of going to the islands and opening a dive shop; he's a divemaster, too.
It's nice that you like America, but Canada is a terrific country, too. Just not as crowded.
Thank you for all the posts.
-justagrunt,
You said, "I could enlist if I reside in the US". So if I lived at my Mother's Fathers house in Cali for a bit I could enlist in the Military???
-Seahunt40,
Canada doesn't have Special Forces teams. All Canada has is a team called JTF II (Joint Task Force II). JTF deals with potential national security threats.
I do really love Canada, I just would never join my countries Military for many reasons. If I ever got accepted into the US Military, would it be harder for me to get secret security clearance since I was born in Canada? I think you need secret security clearance to be a SEAL.

Wow, can't believe I missed this for so long...
"My military is crap"? So your saying your tougher than anyone in the CF? Your more hardcore, hardchargin', tougher, rougher and badass than anyone in the CF? Please, research that statement. If we're crap, how do we keep up one of the highest deployment rates in the world?
So you prefer Clinton to Chretien? At least Chretien's honest. You want the American government? By all means, you can have it, I'll keep ours tho - we can count votes, we don't run out of electricty, we have neither OJ nor Monica nor McCarthy.
Now then, you say all JTF 2 does is act in the ineterst of national security? What the hell do you think US SOF does? Go invade nations for kicks??? But I forgot, your too tough for JTF... JTF deploys all over the world, and conducts many operations (just because you don't see their books in Chapters doens't mean they don't do anything).
So, you've never been in the military, but somehow you feel justified in dismissing the CF? Wild guess, you haven't even considered the UK?
Please, join the US military, I don't want you in the same Army as me.
[This message has been edited by Enfield (edited 05-19-2001).]
Whoa there buddy, I never said I was to tuff for anything and I never said that’s ALL JTF does either. So stop being a jackass. I just prefer the US military over the Canadian Military. I’m just not as patriotic as you are to Canada so that’s why I wouldn't join the Canadian Military. And I have considered the UK.

First off, why the hell did you post this in the SEAL forum? This belongs in GENERALNET, if anywhere. El Jefe?
Second, let me know just how much the CF "sucks" after putting in a few years as a member. To be honest, I had doubts about the quality of our military a few years ago, until I started reading about them in books, mag articles, and here on the net. Know what consistently comes through all the overviews and discussion? The guys and gals that make up our military are professional and competant and have the will to get the job done. There are certain members whom I respect very much on this site who had nothing but good things to say about the times they worked with CF members. The thing that is killing the CF is ridiculous amounts of underfunding. The CF can't afford to buy Globemaster transports for airborne ops, or buy heli carriers to sail around the world to put CF guys into crisis situations as they start (hell, they prolly don't have the scratch to recruit and train enough guys to fill a LPH class ship without giving up commitments they have already) or even buy decent SAR choppers (thank you very fucking much, Mr. Chretien) It's all a matter of having enough of a tax base, and putting money where it makes sense, and right now the gov's priority's are FUBAR.
But on the point that our politicians suck. Duh, Einstein. That's quite the revelation you made. http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/rolleyes.gif But they are no worse or better than American, British, Australian,...... politicians. A pol is a weasel is a pol is a snake is a pol is a dirtbag. Around the world in every clime and place, every politican is more interested in filling their pocket than doing what's good for their nation. That's a simple universal principle. Never trust a politician except to trust that they will lie, obfuscate, and fuck over the people they "serve" to acheive their own purposes and fill their pocketbook.
As for your disgusting lack of any patiotism whatsoever, if you do not love Canada or think you are too good for it, then get the fuck out, cause you are not welcome as far as I am concerned.
Marauder is right, this is the wrong forum.

All you guys are sad and not very bright. Maybe if you listened to what the kid had to say you would understand him more. He said he was 18 so he probably doesn't have that much experience with the Canadian Forces. Hell all kids his age don't think the CF is that great. Since CF is not well funded most students think we lack, but the truth is that CF is a great force. And who cares if he would rather be American then Canadian. I agree with Canadian, try a little humour, it's the weekend!
So, what do Canadians have to be proud of?
1. Smarties
2. Crispy Crunch & Coffee Crisp
3. The size of our footballs fields and one less Down
4. Baseball is Canadian
5. Lacrosse is Canadian
6. Hockey is Canadian
7. Basketball is Canadian
8. Apple pie is Canadian
9. Mr. Dress-up kicks Mr. Rogers ass
10. Tim Hortons kicks Dunkin' Donuts ass
11. In the war of 1812, started by America, Canadians pushed the Americans back...past their 'White House'. Then we burned it....and most of Washington, under the command of William Lyon McKenzie who was insane and
hammered all the time. We got bored because they ran away, so we came home and partied ... Go figure...
12. Canada has the largest French population that never surrendered to Germany.
13. We have the largest English population that never ever surrendered or withdrew during any war to anyone, anywhere.
14. Our civil war was a bar fight that lasted a little over an hour.
15. The only person who was arrested in our civil war was an American mercenary, who slept in and missed the whole thing...but showed up just in time to get caught.
16. We knew plaid was cool far before Seattle caught on.
17. The Hudson's Bay Company once owned over 10% of the earth's surface and is still around as the worlds oldest company.
18. The average dog sled team can kill and devour a full grown human in under 3 minutes.
19. We still know what to do with all the parts of a buffalo.
20. We don't marry our kin-folk.
21. We invented ski-doos, jet-skis, zippers, insulin, penicillin, zambonis, the telephone and short wave radios that save countless lives each year.
22. We ALL have frozen our tongues to something metal and lived to tell about it.
BUT MOST IMPORTANT!
23. ....the handles on our beer cases are big enough to fit your hands with mitts on.
OOOOoohhhhh Canada!!
Oh yeah... and our elections only take one day.

I don't want to get in to the whole US vs. Canada thing but there is one thing I have to take issue with.
Enfield, Clinton is no longer our President. We have the big W now. Whether that's for better or worse depends on who you talk to.
And as for Cadet's long rambling post, I simply quote Jon Stewart from the Daily Show: "Everytime I visited Canada I left with the impression that we could take it over in a couple of hours."
And this kid isn't the first Canadian I've seen on here who has expressed an interest in joining the US Military. In fact, 30,000 of your countrymen joined the US Military during the Vietnam War. Your issue seems to be with him saying the CF is crap. Focusing on that and trying to convince him otherwise instead of bashing the US would probably be a better way to go about discussing this.
Enfield
21 May 2001, 13:11
Daredevil - I see your point. I wasn't trying to say the US is crap - both nations have their good points and bad points - I was just trying to show that the US isn't the utopia that travis seems to think it is, and that US leadership isn't perfcet either. I have no wish to start a US-Canada debate (again), but I will take offense when someone so blatantly and blindly puts down Canada and idolizes the US.
Your right, 30,000 Canadians did go south - and at least that many came north to us. The kids who come on here and say they want to join the US military are the usual bunch of wannabes who have seen to many war movies and read to many SEAL books and watched JAG to much. Victims of the media (hey, we get the same books, TV shows, and movies as the US). Joining a foreign military is a viable option for many Canadians, but not for the wannabe reasons that Travis has shown.

I know you weren't doing the bashing Enfield, it was mainly directed at Cadet8990. To be honest, Canadians aren't the only ones who seem to have a desire to go to a foreign service. I've seen Irish kids say they want to come here and join our military and I knew guys here in the US that wished they could join up with the Brits to get a shot at the SAS or go to Germany for a shot at GSG-9.
The grass always looks greener I guess. I'm a proud American and I don't think I'd like to play games with my citizenship with those odds.

Travis,
when I first started seriously considering my options about my military career I was thinking about goin down to the states. After all I was born there and everything. I was just thinking that my options may be a lil better down there...but at the same time I would prolly be considered an outsider for a long time and I would prolly never feel good about serving there not here. And thats what it came down to - the esteem and pride in serving your OWN country and my roots in Canada far outway my roots in the states. And that pride and respect you have goes a lot farther than how much hightech gear you have.

Yes, we're known for our anti-Canadian bigotry down here. Most people probably wouldn't even notice unless you had a big Maple Leaf tattoo on your arm and even then it would a topic of conversation for all of two minutes.
I can kind of understand where people in other countries might be coming from about going to the US if it's a certain thing they're interested in. Like SEALs for instance. I don't think that Canada has a group that has comparable mission tasking. It seems like if a Canadian kid wanted to be in a maritime oriented SOF he'd have to go to Britain.
Understand I'm not knocking you guys here, I'm just saying that if it's a high speed outfit a kid is interested in getting into, the US probably has more opportunities simply because we have more of those types of units.

That's true, but I think it's more a matter of publicity. More Canadians know about SEALs or Delta than JTF-2, Clearance Divers, or SAR Techs. We get the same media as you Yanks, so a lot of our kids see all the same stuff - the TLC SEAL specials, etc. I'm afraid there is, as of yet, no JTF-2 Calendar and not an endless supply of JTF-2 books. Hell, the total sum of public knowledge on Canadian SOF consists of less than a dozen photos, a chapter in a not-so-good book, and a few articles. And you really have to hunt to find any of it. Just a matter of media exposure - US SOF has better PR.
beachbaby
23 May 2001, 12:08
Hey, Enfield, don't sell yourself short. You, Marauder and Disturbance are doing a damn good PR job for your country's SOF.
In some respects, "Specops PR" is an oxymoron, no?
From a purely operational perspective, the fact that few people know about Canadian special operations has proven to be a great asset. Nobody ever expects the Spanish Inquisition -- or the sneaky Canadian operator.
From a macro-strategic perspective, however, it may be somewhat a disadvantage. There is clearly a need for Canadians, and through them their government, to better understand the scope of operations that the CF undertakes and, hopefully, therefore to better support (recruiting, funding, etc.) its operations.
Truly a Catch-22.
Another aspect of the "greener grass" discussion... although there are far more (thousands, in fact) "specops" positions available in the US, there are also significantly more people competing for them.
If you want to be an operator, do you stand a better chance to get one of 5,000 slots out of a field of 2.5 million -- or one of 200 slots out of a field of 60,000?
I can do the math, but you must decide on your own.
Good luck.

You said it! For a so-called vocalist, she's got a voice that's so anemically weak it's pathetic. Add to that the fact that a significant portion of her repertoire is stolen from Germany's Jennifer Rush (real name: Heidi Stern, daughter of conductor Isaac Stern) — and poorly executed at that! Even that tends to be third-hand butcherings of what Mariah Carey stole (I'm not crazy about her musicianship either).

Actually, what is now the Province of Newfoundland wasn't even officially part of Canada until 1949. The Labrador Coast and the Island of Newfoundland were both separate colonies until that time, when they joined Canada, merging to form a single province in the process.
The Brits were having a closeout sale on colonies in those days, so Canada got two for the price of one <G>.
