My father is going to do the Mt. Blanc descend in ski next year and we wanted to equip him with some geotagging and video gear.

I though this would be a good place to ask.

His helmet is a pretty much standard Giro ski helmet and I was wondering if it would be better to go with a dedicated helmet/cam setup or simply buy a helmet and a mounting platform.

So far I've seen the ContourHD which seems to offer decent quality/price and decent reviews. http://www.vholdr.com/contourhd/helmetcam

Suggestions?

I'd go with the ContourHD.

I have a couple of friends who use them for BASE/skydiving.
The biggest plus for you would be that you don't have to drill holes into your helmet...

I prefer "normal" HD cams like the Sony cx105 for practical reasons. There are pretty decent cameramounts out there, but like I said you would have to drill holes etc into your helmet.
If you should be interested in those mounts/cams shoot me a pm!

I've never tried a ski helmet cam, done more than a few skydiving videos.

The only this I would be concerned with for the HD or any other totally self-contained camera is the battery life, especially in subzero conditions. It would be great if there was a way to keep a larger battery in a warm place and run a thin cable up to the camera.

We went with the ContourHD 1080P because he didn't want to modify his helmet. Got some extra batteries too that he'll put in a warm area.

Probably lend him my 60CSX and use the track feature to geotag his ride.
