Sorry for treading on your turf gentlemen. I'm a former Navy SEAL and I was watching a news program recently that talked about someone becoming an Honorary Marine. I wasn't aware that there was such a thing? I know they give honorary degrees, but I thought you had to EARN becoming a Marine?

You can read the Marine Corps Order covering this title here...

As for the recipients, every now and then they go off the reservation like Chuck Norris.

there is always a discussion or two about Marines that never attended bootcamp, which there has been plenty over the decades-in peace time and war.

The undividual in question was a Navy man who served in WWII i believe. The Marine Corp site has a video about his 800+ shadow boxes of Marines KiA in Afganistan.

Wrote a letter to the editor of the Quantico paper when I was a sergeant; talking about what an oxymoron it was. Impossible to be a civilian AND a Marine. Made the mistake of signing my name to it. Tons of nasty emails from civilian base employees and informal counselings from the COC.

Wow, I didn't realize they'd been pulling that crap for that long. My first brush with this was recently when signing some of my Marines out on leave on Marine Online, a prompt popped up.

"The Leave Pledge

Marine:

I, (Rank, Full Name), recognize the contribution I make to my fellow Marines, Sailors and Civilian Marines of (Unit Name), my brothers and sisters throughout the Marine Corps and Marines and Sailors deployed in defense of freedom around the world. Essential to our mission, I pledge to maintain my commitment with a constant display of honor and professionalism.

I will plan ahead, minimize risks to my safety and return from leave prepared to continue “the fight.”

(Signature of Marine)

Supervisor:

I, (Rank, Full Name), have confirmed that (the requesting Marine) has an acceptable plan for leave and fully understands the valuable contribution every Marine makes to our nation. I am confident that he/she will take the necessary steps to minimize risks and bring honor to our Corps and country while enjoying this well deserved break from the daily routine. I recommend approval.

(Signature of the first Marine in approval chain)"

I was annoyed twice over. First that any Marine, let alone a Staff NCO, would have to "sign" this gay ass pledge to go on leave, and second, that we would bestow the title Marine on some civilian employee.

Dude, look at all the members of the Marine Band....

Damnit. Touche.

However, as kind of a cool sidebar, a good buddy of mine, Marine EOD tech had his whole security escort made up of members of the band this last deployment. How that came to pass, I have no idea, but apparently, his band geeks did some slaying of shitheads on a number of occasions. He loved those kids.

Edited to clarify: Not the President's Own, or the Commandant's Own but the base band, so real Marines albeit band geeks.

This was '96-'97 time frame. Wasn't that long ago...

Don't even get me started on the pledges and safety plans; we could start a whole 'nother thread on that.

I don't have a problem with designating someone an honorary Marine, if they've performed a service to the Corps so that it's rated. IIRC, Jim Neibors (Gomer Pyle) is an honorary Marine... But to tell every fat-assed GS-2 typist that hires on to work at the pay office that they're now a "civilian" Marine burns my ass like a three foot flame. Heck, I think they should make them go through a mini-boot camp to work on base; at least make them understand the rank structure.
