I'm looking for a good GPS under $400 to help with work. Any suggestions?
Other than not using the one the two old people used who were lost for days:eek:

If you don't need all the extras the Etrex series mentioned above is good.

I prefer the sensibility of the 60CSX serie but the etrex is a very good choice also.
The Rhino series offers more of less the same gps features as the Etrex and the 60CSX and it offers FRS/GMRS radio and tracking. It's more expensive but worth it.
Protip: If you plan to hike get the Garmin Carabiner clip mount. http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-010-10481-00-Carabiner-Button-Clip/dp/B00030F7I2
It's a 10$ very well invested.
Rino 120 is what I use.Got it at Warhorse in 04 very happy with it.

I use the Garmin 60 CSX and have been pleased with it. I haven't worked with the Garmin Oregon or Colorado yet, but am looking forward to using one in the future to see how it compares. If you are looking for an Etrex, you can usually find them rather cheap on Craigslist depending on your shopping location.

I worked a dog for the Michigan State Police for 12 years doing bag guy searches as well as search and rescue. We used the Garmin 130's. We were looking at the newer models with the colored screens. The big advantage is if you are working with others who have the same units you can keep track of them as well as yourself. The GPS rtalks as you speak thru the radio or you can just pole the other person.

I used the E-trex in the past (still own one), but purchased an Oregon last year; very good machine !! The antenna is more powerful, so I get better reception, and the 3-inch colour touch-screen makes it simple and quick to do whatever tasks.
I recommend it over the E-trex series, even though it is a little more expensive.

One of the members here is a Garmin distributor. I served with him and he's a good friend.
He will take care of any socnet member.
Contact me via PM if you want his email address.

On another note, I recommend doing some comparative shopping on sites such as Ebay to see what prices are against the stores. Have you considered using an Iphone type application? I routinely use both my phone and Garmin, but prefer the Garmin for its ruggedness and longer battery life once I'm out of the vehicle and on foot.

Yes definately do some comparative shopping. Also Garmin tends to be a little over priced make sure you do your research.

I use a Garmin GPSmap for hiking and sailing, and a Nuvi in the car...
In the woods, I still use a map and compass as my primary.
