Assualt team setup is all dependant on the specific job, but they operate in a very similar set up to the SAS, they are (still) and were initially trained by them. By in saying that, they do 'swap' ideas etc.

Can the SAS be used in say a hostage situation involving terrorists in nz? or do they need to be authorised by the pm or DF cheif?

Highly unlikely, however there are provisions in certain acts for a unit such as the NZSAS to be used. I cant confirm 100% but understand the only person who can approve such an action is the PM (or acting PM)
Here too the police's Special Task Force has the prime responsibility for hostage rescue and similar ops. Though Special Forces might be brought in to deal with large-scale terrorist activity, such as the recent bombings in the Western Cape, though that seems to have calmed down for a while, a lot of those Muslim extremists are in custody. Has there ever been a terrorist incident in NZ? You guys seem to have a pretty peaceful country there, am I correct in saying the majority of policemen are normally unarmed?
PS Five losses in one weekend, now you know how it feels!
only the rainbow warrior incident in '85, as far as i know that is anyway. but im pretty sure.

No terrorist actions in NZ so far (touch wood). Don't forget the Rainbow Warrior was the French Government and not a terrorist action.
NZ Police dont carry weapons (on there person) as a rule, but the majority of Police vehicles have issue Glocks locked away for use and the Sgt's cars also carry a number of other weapons (rifles and shotguns) as well as vests etc etc. If a Police vehicle doesnt have any weapons on borad, them they have to go get them or get them brought to a particular scene. ISnt as hairy as it sounds, there are actually very few firearms incidents in NZ invovling the normal cop. Really quite interesting, we have a high number of firearms per capita, yet have one of the lowest crime rates involving firearms in the world.

yep, Ive seen it. Interesting, but not a hell of a lot of new info.
What I found really stupid was the naming of all the AOS / STG members at the back of the book.

i couldnt really see much point in that list myself, but at least you dont know if they were on the squads in 1967 or '87, so its not known whos actually current.

Was looking over some old threads here and found this one. Seems a little bit more relevant in light of Operation Links and the world situation.
