Is the Steyr family of tactical rifles still used much by the world's military and LE organizations or have they fallen by the wayside with the introduction of the newer type models from AI, H&K, H&S Precision, BGW, etc...
If so, do any U.S. military or LE orgs. use them?

Hey Squidly

I think you should probably address this question In “wepsnet”> “Assault Rifles and Carbines”.

Might get a faster answer.

I think JY could speak better on the military aspect but you do see law enforcement agencies that in the past have bought up the Steyr rifles. However there's a glut of good rifles on the market today so Steyr has to be really competitive if they want to keep or increase their sales.

Hi Squidly;

The new Steyr P series is for LE, the military no longer considers it a first line weapon. The weapon was used by the German and Austrian Armies as the SSG69, but this has changed the up and commer in the world is the AI AW series of weapons, the German Army has adopted this over local made weapons( a first in german military).

They were good in their day but that is long over. They are a 500-600 meter weapon while good for LE not for the military. The newer P series has been, cut back in quality to sell the weapons and they are not up to the quality of the old SSG69 in my opinion.

Take care...Jim

There is indeed a glut of good rifles on the market (the manufacturers mentioned in my original post plus others) as is evidenced by a quick look at www.gunsamerica.com. (http://www.gunsamerica.com.) How do the older SSG-69 PI (iron-sights) models compare with the newer rifles in the same price/availability range?. These rifles are supposed to be accurate out to about 800 meters max (when employed by a trained marksman). I didn't think the .308 round was capable of much more without hand loads. I am no sniper/marksman by any stretch of the imagination but I am curious about the difference in ability between the newer rifles chambering .308 and the older "standbys". I would think the rifle would be limited by the round rather than the technology hence the introduction of the .300 WinMag and the .338 Lapua to precision shooting.

Thanks for all replies,
