I thinking of buying a 700P 26" .308. Can anyone give me an idea as to what size groups the rifle should shoot with Rem. or Fed. 168gr. match ammo, at 100 yards with a rest??? The rifle will have a 30MM 4.5-14 LR leupold with mil dot and badger base and rings. Will glass bedding improve the groups? Has anyone had any problems(large groups, flyers, POI shift etc.) with the Rem. 700P series? And my last question. Can someone give me a good handload for this rifle with 168 and 175 sierra MK with federal brass.

Hi Glen;

Sounds like a good set up.You should expect a 3/4-1 MOA from it before any mods. The only problem I've seen with the 700P has been the barrel touching the barrel channel in spots. this can be eliminated with sand paper and some flat black paint, just run the thickness of two business cards down the channel where it gets tight sand til it passes then touch up. Glass bedding is not needed, the H.S. stock supplied is the same as issue on the M24 with out the adjustable length of pull and uses a aluminum bedding block. This is one of the best buys going in a tactical rifle, the only addition needed is steel trigger guard/floor plate assembly to make it great. With the steel bottom parts as long as you torque the action screws to 65 inch lbs your good to go, with the aluminum parts back off to about 45 inch lbs.

As to hand loads any one giving 2600 fps with a 168 gr. Sierra match or the 175's will do. Good luck with the rifle, you made a good choice. If I can help further give a yell. Take care...Jim

Just a quick note on what JY said. Don't wanna insult anyones intelligence here but be sure you understand that he said INCH pounds. Not FOOT pounds. I know that sounds a little crazy but I've seen it more than once and it ain't pretty. Great rifle though. You probably won't find anything better for the money.

Hi JY and Sharky. Thanks for the help and advice.I picked up the rifle today and I hope to make it to the range in a day or two.The guy had it since 1993 and had only put 34rds. down the tube.It still has the Leupold 3.5-10 police scope on it.My badger rings haven't come it yet, so I can't mount my 4.5-14. I have some M-852 and M-118 SB to try in it, I'll let you know how it shoots. After I try the mil stuff I'll start handloading for it. How good is M-852? Where can I get a steel trigger guard for the 700P? Does it have to be fitted? Thanks again for the help.

If your looking for a steel trigger guard you can try Brownell's. They have an online catalog so it should be easy to find in there.

I was going to replace mine on my PSS until I went with the Accuracy International AICS stock, so its not a concern any more for me.

Unless its an exact copy of the standard aluminum guard, it will need to be fitted to the stock. This my require milling or inletting of the stock to be sure it seats properly.

Good shooting to you

I looked it up at Brownells.com on the web.
Badger Ordinance makes one, for both long and short action Remington rifles.

They list for $300 and are "in the white" so they will have to be finished before they are installed. Also listed that minor fitting was required.

Hi Cut,
Thanks for the help. Mcmillan will be selling a steel trigger guard for the 700 in 2-3 months, I think I'll wait and see what they have to offer. Did your rifle shoot any better with the AICS stock?? How heavy is the stock??
Regards,
Glen

Hi Glen. Not sure on the weight of the stock, I'm sure its on the AI website somewhere. But it is alittle heavier than most anything else I have had in my hands.

I do feel that accuracy was improved with the addition of the stock. I had my PSS in a HS Precision fully adjustable stock, and the groups would be fairly tight, but would seem to wander at times. This is no longer a problem, its that solid of a stock.

Its a true drop in fit, all the hardware is supplied. The 10 rd mags have yet to make themselves available. I only have the mag that came with it right now.

I felt that the feeding from the mags could be improved. So I opened up the feedlips alittle more. I machined a new follower out of plastic with more angle than the factory one. BIG improvement by just those 2 additions.

One thing that others have had problems with is OAL on handloaded rounds in the mags. Some of the guys at Sniper's Paradise are familar with the problem. (They used to be a AI dealer) Just have to keep your rounds close to standard factory ammo lengths, or test them in the mags first before any operational use.

Good shooting to you
