Can anyone provide an up to date status of the southern Baja region of Mexico? Particularly, the Loreto area which is roughly 6-8 hours by vehicle north of Cabo.

I'm traveling to Cabo for work and thought I might bring the wife along to spend a few extra days in Loreto. Great place, beaches, food, laid back and outstanding fishing.

Plan on flying to Loreto from Cabo, the drive is outstanding, but it's long and I'm not keen on driving anywhere in Mexico at night.

Loreto has nothing that really stands out about it, regarding police activities. There have been some recent narco-violence, but even that doesn't have a consistency to it.

I would have no hesitation to traveling to the place with my wife....

Incredible trip. Fishing was good every day. According to the returning guys we met, it was sub-par due to the cold winter which delayed some fish migrations. I'd love to see it when the fishing is normal.

There is a couple of good looking dive spots, but we didn't plan on diving beforehand. Did the snorkling bit for awhile, lot's of fun with alot of small secluded beaches.

Town was safe with no problems, good to very nice hotels and restaurents.
I'll bring the kids when we go back.

I spoke with several ex-pats who said so far there has no been no issues with narco violence spill over. The biggest crime in the past 12 months is the hijacking of a private plane in Mulege (about 90 miles north). Supposedly, the pilot and his family (US citizens) were plane jacked once they landed. They bailed without any injury.

Can't speak of the security sit of today, but can advise on two very real experiences nearby.

The fishin's good, for sure, but if you're mobile, take the two or so hour trip into the mountains, to San Javier. There's an old mission there that's been served by the Loreto Mission since the seventeenth century. Seek out advice on finding the cave paintings on the ride through the pass. It's a ballbuster ride, though. So with young'uns it may not be advised.

For a more air-conditioned trip, drive up toward Mulege. The Bahia Conception view from way above on the roadway is fantastic.

I drove Baja a couple times in the 80s and found it to be unbelievably liberating. Hope your experience is a good one!

I worked a case down there back in '98 when I was a bail bondsman. Pretty nice place and the beaches were great.
