I am absolutely beside myself in anger right now. Adm. Papp was ALWAYS one of the biggest opponents of building the USCG's CT capabilities, and has flat out told my old unit that on at least one occasion.
Now he is being nominated and making plans to destroy such a great asset.
When will the craziness end??????

Any idea why this guy is such an asshat?
Was he kicked out of a CN course for being too weak/stupid? Difficulty in finding a female of our species dumb enough to allow him to propagate his DNA?;)

Sergeant Major,
I know that he has NEVER been a proponent of the enhancement of the AT/CT capabilities within the USCG's charter. He is pegged with penning the retort of, "That's not the Coast Guard way." He came out to one of our demonstrations and flat out told us, "You are nothing special..." Then worked his ass off the change the originally proposed name for the unit (Maritime Special Response Team) to the current Maritime SECURITY Response Team.
He leads a very small but very senior officer/senior enlisted heavy minority against these capabilities.

Its this type of personality that causes the budget to be cut... to hire contractors to do the same job for more money...

Is it just me, or does anyone else foresee a major terrorist attack coming back to our shores in the next three to five years?

Sounds to me like that as a kid, he had his lunch money taken one to many times. Now that he is in charge, he is taking it back "from those types of guys" the only way he knows how.

What I mean is that there are a lot of upper rank Marine officers who would like to do away with and SOF component in their ranks. Not SEAL related.
I should have been more specific.
I think the CG CT teams are a good idea, I still don't think sending CG guys to BUD/S is a good idea, but it is what it is and they seems to be taking to it quite well. Regardless, this move is asinine. CG bring a lot to the table as far as legal boundries, far more than any other government LEO. It's a bad move to cancel this program.

And it is for that reason that I am having a very hard time with his statement of "there are other agencies who do it better." True, we did learn our skills from those who have been doing it longer, but those agencies don't have the legal framework to conduct those missions as Lead Agency. Now, those skill sets are internal, and it took A LOT of training and money to obtain those skills and at the proficiency that we maintain those skills. Why the hell would you want to discard that capability?!
Sorry...But because this hits so close to home, this REALLY irks me. Rant over. (for now at least)

I think the probability of a maritime attack to our coasts has waned over the years. Once perceived as the most vulnerable areas to defend, a major ramp up of preventative response options were formed and funded. The USCG was viewed as the proper ones to task but lacked the funds. Once they recieved funds to start this up they are relizing how much it coasts to maintain proficiency, to include their Helo pilots. If you add a WMD response to the mix, hold on to your wallets. The last training op I saw them do a few years back, one of the rotor blades hit the superstructure and they almost lost it all. I think we are back to assuming risk in the CT littoral area and back to relying on the national force to provide response.
