BASSA (the British Airlines Stewards and Stewardesses Association) are currently in something of a fight with British Airways over potential strike action due to staff cuts.

The following image has appeared on the BASSA website (http://www.bassa.co.uk/BASSA/webpages/front.asp) -

If anyone wishes to get in touch with them regarding their grossly insensitive use of the image then contact details can be found here (http://www.bassa.co.uk/BASSA/WebPages/Contact.asp).

Not only in poor taste, but possibly the WORST photoshop composite I've ever seen...

What's the big deal? The Iwo Jima Photo is not a fucking sacred picture of the 8 pound 6 ounce baby Jesus. Its a very famous photograph that is known world wide. I can't speak for everyone, but as a former Marine, the only thing I find offensive is the fact that the chicks are not hotter and/or wearing less clothes.

As a Non Marine. I agree.
Wasn't the original pic "posed"?

The original pic wasn't posed, but it wasnt the first flag raised either.

The first flag raised was smaller apparently, and the one that got famous was a larger flag which someone higher up decided would look better on top of the mountain. Rosenthal got the 2nd flag raising as it happened.

So maybe the picture isn't sacred. Maybe I'm just sensitive cause a few weeks ago I got to stand on the mountain and look at the island where so many people died...It seems that they're trivializing the accomplishment that cost somewhere around 25,000 lives.

Ditto from me, and I'm an old Jarhead. The image has been used in so many ways since the day the photo was first published.

No. Now that rumor makes me mad, and the fact that it still gets any airtime is unbelievable.

Where did you hear that from? EVERYTHING I have read/been taught indicates that there were two flag raisings. The first was with a smaller flag with little fanfare or attention. Then a big-wig hotshot (officer) decided to make a photo-op and had a choreographed flag raising with a bigger American Flag.

I made pilgrimage to the monument in DC right after I visited Arlington National Cemetery. The memory of the Marines who were there and the moment of time that was captured is sacred to me. Not the photo or image portrayed here. There are bigger things to get all tore up about when it comes to my Corps.

Duly noted, I'll stand down. It's your Corps :)

True.

The first was with a smaller flag with little fanfare or attention.

No, not true. There was a huge deal made when it went up. It wasn't announced but after it was raised the Marines and Sailors sure did notice and made all sorts of noise. Moral went up because of it.

Not True.

Believe it or not, Wiki has it pretty accurate:

Wiki on the photo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raising_the_Flag_on_Iwo_Jima)

Joe Rosenthal captured it just at the right time. It was also captured on video. Nothing was posed. This has been gone over sooooo many times on the History Channel, the Military Channel, documentaries, etc. Even right after the picture was taken and published there was a rumor about it.

I don't know where you got your info from.

Yea, well you know, we were brainwashed. "Your Corps, My Corps, Our Corps, Marine Corps, Oohrah!" and all that.

Hmmm, very enlightening. I got most of my info from the usual sources, History Channel, etc. Also had a battlefield tour by an old Marine vet while in Oki on the Battle of Okinawa, I remember he made some comment about there being two flag raisings. Meh, even our First Sgt. took it upon himself to "sit us devildogs down" and tell us about the two flag raisings. While highly GAY (you had to be there.....), If you can't trust the 1st Sgt, who can you trust?:biggrin:

Just asking. Thanks for the explanation.

I got on the BSSA website and wrote them about this.. I was not offensive.. but I told them exactly what I thought about them using that image and inferring their struggle to what our Marines went through on that little piece of hell on earth.

Its just not right..

I think we are talking past each other here or you are not reading what I am saying. I agree with the two flag raisings. What I am talking about being "rumor" is that the second flag raising was "posed". See my previous posts (#7 and #11).

Sure, I'm offended. Everyone knows the correct term is 'Flight Attendant'.

The picture? Meh. Not like it's Mohammed or anything...
