View Full Version : Are scope levels needed??

Is rifle canting that big of a problem that levels are needed? Can't the human eye detect canting when looking through the scope?
Does anyone know what the POI shift would be at 100, 500, 1000 yards if your scope is mounted 1.5" above the bore and the rifle is canted 10 degrees?
If a level is needed what type/name brand should I buy?
Sorry about all the questions, I must be the FNG on the block.
Glen
Hi Glen;
No big thing about questions, the only bad one is the one not asked.
If your scope is mounted with the reticle square to the bore you shouldn't suffer any cant problems. Most of the devices mount on the scope tube, to use your eye has to move to it then back to the eyepiece of the scope. Never used one myself but would imagine after checking the bubble level and then back to the eyepiece things will change just through muscles in the face =80 With the horizontal plex of the reticle level to the axis of the bore I don't think you really need the gadget, maybe for a bench rest shooter with his rifle firmly anchored it may be useful. Just my 2 cents on "levels".
Take care...Jim

I agree with Jim. Most people cant shoot well enough that a scope level would improve their performance to any noticable degree. Springfield came out with a tactical scope with an internal level visible inside the scope. Just seems like another useless gee-whiz gadget to me.

Plus you get more than a good hint just from the crosshairs.
Sharky: I flunked by two points. I don't sweat much, though: I shot a Medic and chose a stupid firing position and it's not like I'll be making the same mistakes again. Top score on cammoflage and distance assessment though, by no small amount thanks your advice.

Glad I could help. Don't give up. Making mistakes is not a problem. Not learning from them is. If I can help with anything else, let me know. Stay hard........Sharky
