Anybody has any experience with this rifle? I heard it's good, but I only heard that from the ppl. who were trying to sell the rifles. I need your opinions. Thanks for the help.

Hi sierra129;

I've had an AI AW (PSG90) since the first 35 were imported into the country. Mine is in 7.62X51mm, but have fired others in .338 Lapua and find they perfom the same. That is to say great! And I do not intend on selling mine.

The weapon system is purpose built as a SWS not a reworked hunting rifle. The bedding is more akin to a bench rest rifle than anyother, rock solid. The action is an improved L96A1 set up for arctic weather, living in Buffalo this could be handy. Bolt take down is very similar to the Winchester MOD70, as is the safety(3 position), and that says a lot when you want to take it down during that beautiful lake effect snow to get the ice out! The trigger is adjustable, but straight from IA in England mine was 2 1/2 lbs, just where I like them.

The barrel is fully free floated, and can be changed when need be with no special tools required. Head space is set by a collar behind the barrel, also no special tools needed. It will be many thousands of rounds before you see any of this done though. On the AW (PSG90) a flash suppressor muzzle break is fitted and is the base for the iron sight. The barrel is a true floating barrel, you can slide a rich man's wallet in the channel. A ParkerHale bipod is standard and the isn't much you can say about that except they are the BEST bar none, some newbees can't use them because they mistake the "wobble" as something wrong, not realizing the proper deployment/use of the bipod. Overall finish is excellant, the green baked on finish on the metal parts wears very well, and the green side panels of the stock a very strong and flexible.

I have nothing but praise for the SWS, accuracy using 168gr Match ammo, both M852 and Fed Match have been less than 1/2 moa and consistant. The iron sights were on target out of the box, so have to say the rifle was totally set up when I unpacked it. If you have specific questions let me know I'd be glad to help. I posted photos of my system on SOCCHAT albums, JY's Toys, they may help with some details, if it's not posted and fits on my scanner let me know.

Take care...Jim

I'll second that - again I am not a sniper, but I am involved with the development of sniper kit and spend a lot of time with various snipers here in the UK.

The AI is standard issue to many western army sniper units - and is the weapon of choice of most military CT sniper teams and many civilian ones.

It is a dedicated sniper system and sold as such - whilst it is a little more pricy than some, it will last for years and is designed to do a job, and does it very well.

Hi JY

I do live in Buffalo NY. But I'm not American
I'm from a tropical country and what I'm trained for is mostly jungle warfare. What is your opinion on the rifle as far as operating under adverse conditions always found in the tropical jungle? (Humidity, heat, etc.) Do you think the rifle will still perform as good?

Hi sierra129;

The AI AW operates under all conditions from the worse triple canopy to the arctic circle and beyond. I don't think you could ever go wrong with it, the same thing making it good for the arctic,works with the tropical problems. This a very well thought out and engineered sniper weapon system, I would advise to get a totally UK produced weapon, some are being assembled with US made barrels in Tenn. I'm sure the quality is the same, but...

Take care...Jim

Id like to put the Truvelo .308 from south africa against the AI .308

Im sure any serious marksman would prefer the Truvelo .308 over the AI .308 in any situation that a sniper would be expected to operate in.

The Truvelo series has proven itself here to be better than the AI series and thats why it has been replaced.

The only drawback is that this fine series of rifles is produced in South Africa.

JY you have heard of the Truvelo Armory of RSA right?
