The February 2001 American Rifleman has an article titled "Long-Range Warrors The USMC M40 Rifles". The article provides a brief history and evolution of this fine tactical rifle. The article also mentions some of the new features of their new M40A3. The M40A3 will be over 17.0 pounds, about 3 pounds more than the M40A1.

The M40 has always been a great rifle. Probably the best sniper rifle out there.

Kodiakrush,
Roger that! The USMC M40's are built using methods that have been proven over years of range and field use.
My new M40A1 should be finished in a few weeks. I will workup a long range load that will provide sub 1/2 MOA accuracy.
Yesterday, I practiced at the Duarte, CA public range for next weekend's matches at Camp Pendleton. I was the only person shooting iron sights at 200 yards. As usual, there were approximately 15 guys shooting various scoped hunting and tactical looking rifles off of sandbags and rests. A few of the shooters were shooting at those 2 inch diameter orange dots. The way they were shooting, I'm sure they have enough dots for several years of shooting. http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/smile.gif

Carl, the M40A3 is switching to the McMillan A4 stock. It is a good 1.5lbs heavier than the A1 stock. They have gone to beefier, floor metal rings and bases sothe increase is there. You have to love the Marine Rifles though. Old world craftsmanship in a throw away era.

Hi Mike,
The new USMC M40A3 will most likely be another great rifle. I'm not really concerned about the M40A3 weight increase. My M1A weighs-in at 16.0 pounds.
I ordered the USMC M40A1 McMillan stock for my M40A1 copy. As you know, the fiberglass is extra thick. I also purchased the modified Win. M70 trigger guard and floor plate. I was going to mount the scope on Mark 4 rings, but, went to Mike Lau for the clip slot machining and tanged base mounting.
It never fails! Today, I confirmed that I must go to Conneticut ASAP! I'm shooting this Sunday, so I'll go Monday or Tuesday of the following week. Have to keep my priorities straight!! http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/biggrin.gif

Hi Carl.
I'm having Mike build myself a M40A3 as we speak. Its been gone about 10 months now.
And its in .300WinMag for alittle more reach than the standard .308.

Hi Cut,
Mike and TBA build fine rifles!! This is my first fully tacticle rifle. If it is finished in time for me to workup a long range load, I'll shoot it in the "Any rifle" and "Any sight" matches at this year's California State LR Championship.
So, what have you been up too? How is the handloading?
Dinner time. .... Take care!

Hey Carl, good to see you again.
Well, the handloading has taken a backseat for the moment.
I've bought a 1972 Land Rover that I am planning on restoring. So it cut into the "gun fund" with that purchase.
So hopefully I'll be able to get some brass, and bullets and once it warms up outside I'll be able to get in the shop and crank out some rounds.
Donations accepted !

You must remember that most of the new weight includes a removable Harris bi-pod. I'll bet that by the time the guys take it to the field it will not be 17#.
